Unplanned Birthday Week

Unplanned Birthday Week

Well, for a person who likes routine and being able to plan ahead, this week was NOT what we had planned 🙂 We had some unanticipated days of school due to cold, some more snow, and I had to just play it by ear and roll with the punches as they say. Because when school closes, as any working parent knows, it’s a scramble to figure out how to fit in childcare, move meetings, figure out where you’re working, etc. Oh, and it was also my birthday this week! And an extremely cold birthday at that. But more on that below …

Here’s how this week looked … and spoiler alert, since most of my workouts were indoors, in lieu of just boring treadmill pics, there are some life pics as well:

Sunday: 8.09 treadmill miles running, 1.25 miles walking

I woke up to “feels like” 4 degrees, still more than 1 foot of snow on the ground, which was a perfect formula to hop on the treadmill. So I did! I got in 1.25 miles, then GM woke up so I got him out of bed, made him breakfast, and brought him in the room with the treadmill with me, and then got in almost 7 more miles. Would I have preferred to be outside? Yes, but I’m proud of getting in 8 on the treadmill – it doesn’t always happen.

Monday: 4.25 treadmill miles, 2.5 treadmill miles walking, back and bicep workout/started leg workout 1.85 mile outdoor walk

NO SCHOOL – and I was off work! It was COLD but it was nice to wake up late and get in a short treadmill run before hanging out with the kids. B wanted to do some work in the basement (where the gym is), so I wanted to get in and off the treadmill as fast as possible. The day included some playing in the snow, then in the afternoon, we went to the Cavs game – first time this year with the whole family!

Tuesday: 4 treadmill miles, finished leg workout

NO SCHOOL again! This was due to a cold day – the big kids had no school because it was too cold out! Luckily daycare was open, because I had to go into the office. B brought the big kids with him to work, I went to my job, and off we were back to somewhat normal. The good news is I did get to sleep in a little big because I didn’t have to wake up to get the kids ready by 6:20!

Wednesday: 4.83 mile treadmill run, 2.25 mile treadmill walk, chest and tricep workout, 1.66 mi walk outside

After SIX days off school (thanks to snow day, cold day, MLK day, and teacher day), the kids were back! As much as it was not fun to get back up early, it was nice to be back in our routines. Despite the cold and snow, I did get a little lunch walk in outside! It was FREEZING (feels like 10 degrees) but warmer than Tuesday and the blue skies were out!

Thursday: 5.4 mile treadmill run, 3.3 mile treadmill walk, shoulder workout

I somehow got out of bed and onto the treadmill by around 5 a.m., so I had enough time to get in 5 miles and some weights – winning! I also had to do a continuing education/online course at work, so I walked while doing it. Winning again!

Friday: 7.1 miles on the treadmill, 2ish miles COLD walk outdoors

Happy birthday to me! There’s nothing better than starting your birthday with a long run (in my opinion) and I was so glad to have gotten one in. I watched part of McFarland, USA, a movie about a track team and the running scenes definitely motivated me! When B asked me what I wanted to do for my birthday, I told him I wanted to get OUTSIDE and take a walk – it was so cold, but he did join me! We froze and I had to go out to lunch to get soup and defrost afterwards, which was delightful!

That night, B and I braved the codl again and went on a date to celebrate my birthday! I was lucky enough to have my inlaws babysit, while we went to see Marty Supreme, and then got dinner.

Some of my dinner – octopus was delish!

Saturday: 3.33 mile run on the treadmill plus back and bicep workout

I didn’t quite finish my run, as GM woke up early and LM and I had to be out the door by 8:30 for our busy day. We had LM’s basketball game, then FW’s basketball game, then a funeral and then GM’s futsal game. I also wanted to get in a trip to the grocery store before our supposed winter storm comes in, and we were celebrating my birthday with the family with takeout from one of my favorite places and my favorite type of cake – ice cream cake (yes, even with the cold!). It was a busy Saturday, but that’s how it’s been the last few weeks.

From basketball to basketball to futsal, GM was pooped!

Total:  37 miles running, plus some walking and weights

Some questions for you:

  • Are you due for a big snowstorm this weekend too?
  • What’s your birthday cake or treat of choice?

Happy belated birthday! It looks like you had a great week. Glad the kids were able to resume their activities.

I don’t have a set favorite birthday treat. One of my favorites was the lemon pound cake my son made me one year—it was amazing. On the easier end, I really love the Starbucks brownies.

Happy birthday! I’m glad you got to celebrate with some fun activities this week. That is a long time for the kids to be off school but I’m sure they loved it! It does make it a bit challenging for the working parents though. Speaking of the Cavs… my friend’s daughter is on the Cavs Dance team. She’s living her dream life right now!

Happy Birthday! We got all the cold and wind, but no snow or ice. We had so much sunshine that it was deceiving, because it looked 50-degrees warmer than it actually was, LOL.

We’ve got more snow today and more coming now! So we may be stuck under snow for a long time.

Happy belated birthday! Looks like some good celebrations despite the less pleasant weather. Your kids seem to enjoy the snow. I’ve always wondered why “snow days” are a thing in the US – there are so many areas where snow and cold weather is normal in the winter? Why do they close schools and all that, really? I’m curious. I’m from Sweden and life goes on even with -30C there. I remember walking to school when I was 9 and we had -28C (-33F) and tons of snow. Is it a cultural thing or something to do with insurance?

I don’t know! I know my me the road are bad and the busses can’t get the kids when there’s too much snow. But I also remember going to school when it was cold when I was young, too!

Happy belated birthday! Sounds like you had some really nice celebrations!

It’s such a scurry when school is closed and you have to rearrange schedules, but it sounds like you did a fantastic job navigating all of that!

Happy Birthday Melissa! Looks like a fun celebration and delicious (and interesting!) dinner! I’m a chocolate lover, so I almost always go for something chocolate to celebrate. But I do love a good creme brulee… and key lime pie..

This winter has been insane! And it looks like there’s more to come….

Happy Birthday!!! Sounds like a great day (despite the cold.) Eesh, all those days off school are hard. Great job on getting all those runs and workouts in!

No snow here… it’s been hot and I’m cranky about it.

Happy birthday! Your birthday dinner looks amazing! We always enjoy getting to a nice restaurant to celebrate our birthdays. It sounds like a busy week with all the activities and with so many days off it really can be nice to get back to routine. I can’t’ wait for the worst of this winter weather to end!
