Actually Taking a Break

Actually Taking a Break

If you’ve been following my training for a few weeks, you may recall I talked about some hip pain. I continued to run on and off, but this week I realized it was not going away and decided to take a full week off. So this week I focused on core workouts, weight training and walking (NO RUNNING!). The fact that I was out of town for part of it helped – no treadmill to tempt me!

Here is what the week looked like:

Sunday: 7 outdoor miles walking with weighted vest

Sunday I woke up to 60 degrees, and partly cloudy skies. It would have been a great day for an outdoor run! It actually took some serious self restraint for me NOT to change my mind and go for a run. But I got out and did a long walk with my weighted vest instead. I was grateful to not have any Sunday activities until 1 pm and for B to be able to entertain the kids while I was gone for so long!

Monday: 4.75 mile treadmill walk, core, back and bicep workout, .8 mile walk outside at lunch and 2.75 mile treadmill walk during the day

I got in a Caroline Girvan core workout and then my chest and tricep workout. Then it was time for .. that’s right, a treadmill walk! The kids didn’t have school, so I was able to get in a longer walk than usual, which was nice. I also got in some miles while working later in the day.

Tuesday: 4.9 mile treadmill walk, 3 mile outdoor walk, core workout, shoulder lifting

A boring workout day! I got in some treadmill walking, a core workout, and a shoulder dumbbell workout. I also got in an outdoor walk as well during lunch.

Wednesday: 3.1 mile treadmill walk with incline, core, back and bicep workout, 2.85 mile walk outside

Another day, another walk! I got in a Caroline Girvan weighted core workout, followed by some back + biceps and legs. Then, it was treadmill walking time! I did “cheat” and tried VERY SLOW jogging for about .5 mi, which felt ok on my hip. I was tempted to go longer but slowed it down and returned to walking. I was also able to get in a nice long walk at lunchtime!

Thursday: 3.5 mile treadmill walk on an incline, core workout, leg workout, 2.6 mile outdoor stroller walk with GM

I did some leg exercises (step ups, kettlebells) and a core workout, and then hopped on the treadmill for another walk. I did mix in a few minutes of SLOW jogging again to see how it felt. Note – it did not feel normal, so I will not be doing that again 🙂 But I also got in a little walk with GM to start y morning. We picked up some bagels at our bagel shop before it was time for me to work and him to go to school. It was 55 degrees at 7 a.m. and our first pre-work walk in forever!

Friday: 5.09 mile outdoor walk and 2.3 miles hiking

I was out of town, but was able to bundle up and get outside for a 5 mile walk to kick off my day. It was 30s, and I was FREEZING! It had been 70 in Cleveland on Thursday when I left, so having the temps cut in half was a shock to my system. Later, I got in another walk with my friends at the Pinebush Reserve, a park system in Upstate NY with tons of trails.

Saturday: 5 outdoor miles walking, 3.33 outdoor miles hiking

Saturday morning, I was sleeping at my friend’s house and awake before my 2 friends were,  so I decided to go for a walk. I got in 5 miles. Then, later in the day, we went for another walk at the Pinebush Reserve again.

not running related, but the day also included 2 of my favorite things- a stop at a tea store AND Korean food for dinner!

Kimchi soup
So many teas!

Total: no running, but lots of walking and weights

Some questions for you:

  • How is your weather lately?
  • How often do you use a weighted vest?

I’m glad to see you giving that hip a rest, but have you considered getting it checked out? I hope it feels better soon. I know how frustrating this is–been there…

I have not used a weighted vest. We do heavy bag carries at the gym and oof! What a challenge!

to echo what Wendy said above, it is great to give your hip a rest but since that has not really helped, have you considered getting it checked out by an Ortho? I do love my weighted vest and use it often

It’s so hard to hold back but sometimes really is the only way to recovery.

Our weather has been all over the place — back to the 30s this morning!

It sounds like you’re in the same injury cycle I was in FOR YEARS – never giving your body enough time to heal completely. It feels mostly better so you start running again on a still-injured body part (that was certainly my thoughts). Don’t you think it’s time to see a doctor and maybe do physical therapy to get you out of this cycle of endless injury?

Also, if it was me, I wouldn’t be using the weighted vest right now. If your hip hurts when you run, just walk. No need to add additional resistance at this point.

Maybe this all sounds tough and not what you want to hear (and feel free to tell me to mind my own business), but this seems to be something that needs to be addressed by a doctor and physical therapist.

Nice job giving that hip a break. You can never go wrong with strength training, and as long as the walking doesn’t hurt it, it will also help (motion=bloodflow=healing). I know it’s hard not to run, but at least you can get out and walk. I’ve had injuries where I couldn’t even do that (sprained ankle) and that REALLY sucks!

Hope this time off helped- sending healing vibes to that hip!

I hope the recovery for your hip has been successful, or at least has things moving in the right direction. I’ve had my weighted vest (15 pounds) for almost a year, and I like it…but I often forget to wear it. I am trying to remember to use it for other activities as well (stair-climbing and elliptical) to get in the routine of actually USING it, LOL.

I know it’s tough to not go for a run, especially with the weather turning warmer… but hopefully the rest will help you heal! Keep your eye on the big picture – your upcoming race. And if it were me, I’d go see the Dr if it’s been a month. With your energy focused in the right areas you’ll be back at it in no time!

Rest often works and I hope your hip feels better or as others have said, get an xray and mri!
