Spring break

Spring break

It is spring break for the big kids here this week, but it’s also the start my busy season at work, so we typically don’t spend too much time away. That meant the week included a mini vacation AND sleeping in! Not having to get up at 4:30 a.m., but still having time to get in a walk/weights before starting my day is EVERYTHING!

Here is what the week looked like:

Sunday: 4 miles treadmill walking with the weighted vest, core, shoulder workout

Happy Easter to all who celebrate! I set my alarm for 4-something, because we had a full day ahead – 8 a.m. mass, then an egg hunt, then a brunch from 11:30-4ish. I got in some treadmill miles (with a slight incline and weighted vest) plus some weights to start the morning.

Monday: 5.1 miles of treadmill walking, weighted ab workout, chest/tricep workout and started some back/biceps, 1.23 mile outdoor walk

With spring break here, I got to sleep in! I woke up later than usual, and got in a walk and weights before having to get to work. I did get in a short walk at night, too.

Tuesday: 4.4 miles treadmill walking, back and bicep workout, some legs, and core

I had a long day in the office with lots of meetings planned, so I was grateful to get in a short workout before a long day of sitting.

Wednesday: 4.75 mile treadmill weighted vest walk with incline, core, some legs

I woke up with a headache – ugh! And GM was waking up too. So I did a core workout (Caroline Girvan – 8 min weighted abs!) and then got him out of bed to hang out while I did a walk and weights. No lunchtime walk because I spent lunch working and packing- we had plans to leave for spring break Wednesday afternoon!

Thursday: 1 mile treadmill walk, 3.75 mi outdoor hiking

After getting into the hotel late Wednesday night, Thursday morning we were all a little tired! I had time for a short post-breakfast walk before meeting the family at the hotel pool! Then we headed to our first destination– Shenandoah National Park! We got in two hikes during the day before the kids rebeled and had enough. It was a beautiful day and really not crowded, which was perfect. Then it was time to drive to Alexandria for the rest of our vacation. We walked around the Old Town area to get dinner, which was about another mile of walking.  Everyone was pooped Thursday night!

Friday: 1.5 treadmill walk, then lots more vacation walking

Once again, I got in a short walk before meeting the family at the hotel pool.  The day consisted of a LOT of walking for siteseeing — to see the White House, Washington Monument. Lincoln Memorial, and then to the Museum of American History. After walking to dinner again, I was at more than 23,000 steps!

Saturday: 3.1 miles treadmill walking

I set an alarm for 6 to get up and walk at the hotel gym before we started our day. I don’t typically wake up before the kids in a hotel because we share a suite and I’m worried about waking them up when I open the door (which is where they sleep), but I decided to try it. They slept through it!

The day included some museum visits and … that’s right, more walking around!

Once again, the day ended with 23,000+ steps! Three days in a row with plenty of vacation steps.

Total: Lots of walking and weights again this week

Some questions for you:

  • When was spring break near you?
  • Have you ever been to Shenandoah National Park?

What a fun trip! And a great way to ensure that the kids sleep well, lol. When we took the boys on trips, their favorite part was the hotel pool, lol. Can you believe I’ve never been to DC?

This was my kid’s first time to DC! We are supposed to go March 13, 2020, but had to cancel the day before our flight. We had a blast and definitely not enough time! And yes, we hit the hotel pool every day/ night+

it was spring break here too last week.

The gym was more crowded but less traffic.

That looks like a great family trip.

    I’ve never been.

You are in Alexandria?! No way!!!! I guess I never realized that, whoops! No wonder your weather always seems so much better than ours!

DC is such a fabulous place to visit! Although your kids are still young, there’s much to see and learn about our nation’s history. The monuments still take my breath away 😉

Yes, I was thinking about you and all your cherry blossom photos! Sadly we were there too late to enjoy any of them but we did enjoy great weather!

I’ve been to DC, but not Shenandoah- it looks beautiful, I want to go! Sounds like a really nice trip for you guys. Your spring break is late compared to ours- ours was a few weeks ago. But we get out of school early, by the end of May. Looks like you had some nice weather!

My kids’ spring break always aligns with Easter, so it changes every year. Most other schools already had theirs too! We usually get out the last week in May but we go into the first week of June this year!!

We went to Shenandoah last year, but just for a day visit. We found some great hikes. And time with the kids is always special! Sounds like you had a lot of special time with your kids too. I want to take a trip to DC. I might have been there as a kid, but I really don’t remember it!

DC was such a good family-friendly vacation spot! We will definitely need to go back and do more – 2 days was not enough time!

You were down in my neck of the woods! I’ve been to Shenandoah National Park several times and most recently when I met Judy (who used to link up with us) a few years ago and we took a hike together. I bet your kiddos loved the Museum of Natural History! Our sons loved going there when they were little.

I didn’t realize that was your area! It was beautiful and we had some great hikes together. I wish I had more time!

We’re closer to DC than the Shenandoah Valley, but it’s an easy trip for hikes, etc. We drive through the Shenandoah Valley whenever we go to the farm. 🙂

Spring break is next week, and I cannot wait!!! Ha, ha! Also, I am just now getting back into running, and I want to incorporate strength training… Do you do that before or after your run? Clueless, wannabe runner over here! 🙂

    1. Melissa (I Crashed the Web) Avatar

I’m sure there’s a science behind what’s best for recovery, performance, etc. but I have to do what’s best for me! And for me, that means doing weights and THEN running. Otherwise I’d find any excuse to just keep running and skip weight training. I get the weight training over with, and then I run! I do 4 days of weight training most weeks.

      1. Nicole Avatar

I honestly think that will be what works best for me too!! Ha, ha! I started strength training this week, but did both days after I ran… And my hands were SO sweaty while trying to hold the weights. And my legs were a bit dead when trying to do the squats. I think doing a bit before would just make WAY more sense, but I wasn’t sure if anyone else did it that way. I like what you said about “hey, this is what works for me!” I think that’s so important to prioritize sometimes!
