Getting the hip checked out

Getting the hip checked out

Well, I took many of your advice and finally made an appointment for a sports medicine doctor this week to get my hip checked out. I had my appointment on Friday and should hopefully more soon.

So naturally, using “runner logic” (you know, it’s like “runner math”) – I decided to try out three runs this week. Two so I could see how I felt and be sure to describe it to the doctor, and one after the visit just in case (and of course, I needed an excuse for a run!). I have to say – it felt SO GOOD to run again! But also NOT good because my hip wasn’t 100% better. Ah well.

Here is what the week looked like – one workout in DC, a few runs before the dr, and then lots of walking and weights:

Sunday: 3.5 miles treadmill walking on an incline at the hotel gym, started chest/tricep workout

We had plans to drive back to Cleveland from DC, so I set my alarm to get in a little walk and some weights before our day. The treadmill had a leg workout on the treadmill, so I put that on and let it control the incline – it was fun to not think about it but still get in varying inclines! I also did a few free weights before it was time to get back to the room for our last hotel breakfast and swim.

Monday: 2.8 miles of treadmill walking, weighted ab workout, chest/tricep workout, 2. 22 mile outdoor walk with GM before work, 1.93 mile during the day

Ouch! I went to bed at almost midnight Sunday between getting home late, getting the kids ready for school the next day, laundry, unpacking, tummy issues (kids were feeling a little anxious I think before the return to school). So I got up later than usual (no idea what happened for 30 minutes after my alarm was going off!) and got in some weights, weighted abs and a short walk. It was shorter than I would’ve liked but I ran out of time (see: sitting in bed for 30 min after my alarm went off). Luckily, it was 65 degrees when GM got up at 7 a.m., so we had time to walk to our favorite bagel shop and pick up some bagels! It was nice to get outside and get in some steps before starting my day. I had a meeting at lunchtime, but decided to get in a little more walking in between everything — so I got out again! What a BEAUTIFUL day – it was mid-70s and the flowers were all blooming.

Tuesday: 3.5 miles treadmill walking, back and bicep workout, and core

I had a long day in the office with lots of meetings planned, so I was grateful to get in a short workout before a long day of sitting. And that was my only workout! Besides getting in my steps thanks to walking to a few meetings across the office and to our I&T department.

Wednesday: 5.5 mile treadmill walk with incline, weighted core, some legs, 2ish miles walking outside

I went to bed later than usual Tuesday again (after 11) and then GM was up in the middle of the night with a bad dream, so I was struggling this morning! I powered through and got in some core and light cardio. I also got in some treadmill walking while working later in the day, and then two short walks outside.

Thursday: 2.75 mile jog outside, core workout, 2.21 treadmill walk on incline, 2.21 mile walk outside with GM

I had made a doctor’s appointment to get my hip checked out this week, so I decided to test it out with a run first! And guess what – it didn’t hurt while running but was tender/sore later in the day. I had a day of lots of sitting – and no time for a lunchtime walk, and just nonstop sitting/standing wasn’t really good on my hip either I assume.

Friday: 3.1 outdoor run, 1.5 treadmill walk on incline, core

Once again, I got in a short run to test out the hip before my dr appointment. It honestly felt ok when running, but was sore/tight after the fact. But thankfully, I was able to get in a visit with the dr for an X-Ray and MRI – so I should know more next week! I told the dr I think it’s a tendonitis/bursitis issue, but he didn’t seem to think it would be — but we will find out from the MRI. Good news was- nothing was showing up on the X-Ray … but I pretty much assumed that nothing was broken based on the minor dull pain I feel. When I asked the dr when he thought it was, he said perhaps a labrum tear based on the pain – but that it usual hurts a lot more than what I was describing to the touch and when I run. It is a dull pain and I can move no problem – include going for a few runs this week – so who knows what it actually is! I will hopefully find out soon.

Saturday: 5.32 miles outdoor walking/running

I set an alarm for 6:20 to get up and walk before a busy day of a few kid activities (soccer practice and a baseball game), plus some self care for me – I had scheduled my annual haircut for the morning!

It was 60s out, so I loved getting in a run/walk with the sun out. I got outside and the sun was rising and it was a beautiful reddish orange color. I decided this would be my last “run” until I find out what’s wrong.

That night,  we had a chance to get dressed up and went to a benefit for our kids’ school. It was fun to go out without the kids and support a good cause.

Total: Lots of walking, a few running miles, and then weights again this week

Some questions for you:

  • Have you ever had an MRI on your hip?
  • Do you do runner math? How about runner logic?

You look so pretty all dressed up for your event! It does feel good to do that, doesn’t it?

Of course, I do runner’s logic–because I love to run and will justify it no matter what. I hope you find an answer to your pain–I think it’s great that you went. I would bet he sends you to PT no matter what is wrong–they usually do–but maybe it will help your body mechanics. And don’t get me started on runner’s math, lol

Thanks, it was fun to go out (and forget about my hip for a bit haha).

Hah, yes, I am following the same plan before my ortho appointment on Tuesday for my knee. You are lucky to get your MRI the same day. That would be a separate appointment for me that could take weeks to schedule (if I need one).

I hope the diagnosis is something easily fixable!

I was SO lucky! They actually told me I had to wait 10 days to schedule it bc of insurance. But while we were scheduling my follow up appointment, she saw that my insurance had already approved it …AND they had an opening in 50 minutes about 20 minutes away, so I drove there right away! I lucked out.

Runners Math! I can honestly say that yesterday’s race didn’t have me thinking at all about “doing the math,” LOL. I knew there was no PR happening and with the weather conditions my only focus was persevering to the finish line. It’s really quite liberating, and I’m trying to do that more often, as it allows for more focus on the experience instead of the distance or time.

Good luck. Glad you are finally going to find the cause of your pain. It’s been hurting for a long time, right?

    Hope it’s not serious.

When I broke my foot, the dr was in disbelief because I was able to walk. I said I’m a runner, we ignore pain. LOL

I’ve had an MRIs on my knee, foot, neck.

I hate them because I find it so hard to stay still.

Oh good- I hope the MRI gives you some answers. Yes, it seems like if it were a torn labrum it would hurt a lot more during your runs… but we will see.

I would totally have done the same as you- I mean how can you explain the pain if you’re not having any? Of course you had to try some running!

I’ve had a few MRIs but not on my hip.

You look pretty all dressed up! That looks like a fun event.

That hotel gym in DC looks like a nice one! Isn’t it great to score such a nice gym?!

It’s great that you finally went to the doctor to see what’s going on with your hip. Hopefully you’ll get some answers soon.

What a beautiful sunrise for you yesterday. I’m always so happy to be up and outside to enjoy them. 🙂

I have had an MRI on my foot when I had a stress fracture. I hope you find out something soon, and it’s not too bad! It will be good to have an answer since this has been going on for so long. Glad you got it done so quick, that was lucky!

The weather last Monday was pretty great around here too. I am getting antsy to plant some flowers but boo, frost warning tonight!

I’ve had an MRI done on my knee, because I injured it back in 2020. Better to get it checked! But running injuries are so frustrating, especially when you know you could run more… but a joint or part of your body is saying “no”. I hope it’s nothing but good news and an easy fix!
