Not to be a bummer, but I had a hard week.
I know, it’s the holiday season. Everything is merry and bright. It’s a time to be joyous and thankful and celebratory. But, between my uncle passing away, the realization how different this holiday season will be without seeing my family, and some work stuff, it just wasn’t my best week. And this impacted my running AND walking. I just didn’t have the energy to get up in the morning and run a billion miles, and hit snooze way too much. I didn’t have the time to talk long walks with the family and the cold, icy/snowy weather made it even harder to get out of the house.
I’m hoping that the coming week will be better. With only three work days, I have no excuse not to sleep in, get in a run and get outside with the family. So, fingers crossed that I can continue to keep my running streak up (240 days!) and get out of this funk.
Here’s what the week looked like:

As you can see, despite my little funk, I still kept up the running streak AND did get in some walks. But, most were just “meh” and I need to get back in my groove.
Sunday I did get outside after most of the snow melted, and got in a festive run! I love breaking out these socks this time of year.
But then, it snowed again! We didn’t get as much here as my family in NY did, but we got a few inches that warranted a run in my Yaktrax.
And then, the snow turned into ice, so I was stuck inside again. It was a really thin layer of ice, that even my Yaktrax wouldn’t help me with. I’m not sure how to run on those slick roads, so I got in a 5.25 mi treadmill run instead.
Some questions for you:
- How do you run when it’s super icy out — do you have any shoe or product recommendations?
- What’s your least favorite running season? For me, winter- hands down!
I’m linking up with Deborah and Kim for the Weekly Run Down.
I’m sorry you’re in a funk, but sometimes you just need to roll with it — sleep more if you can and be gentle on yourself. You still logged quite a lot of miles this week. I’ve got not advice for running on ice. Our sidewalks are slick with frozen run-off from saturated lawns, so I have to walk in the street.
I am so sorry that you are having a rough week. The holidays can be so stressful and bring up so many emotions. This year, that is all magnified so much. Hope you have a much better week ahead. Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to you and your family
Sorry for the tough week, Melissa. Hopefully the easier week (work-wise, that is) will help you re-group. I just wear my regular shoes for winter running…never tried trail shoes, and YakTrax probably wouldn’t be ideal for me because I always have some pavement to navigate. If it’s icy outside, I just bail. On occasion, I MIGHT do the treadmill, but don’t bet on it LOL
I think funks are the reminders to let ourselves grieve and just honor our emotions. *HUGS* Love your socks. I can deal with winter better than summer. I run really hot
Sorry to hear about your tough week. It’s a very different kind of Christmas Season this year. My least favourite has to be summer but only because it just gets too hot here!
I’ve had better luck with Kahtoola nanospikes than Yaktraks, but honestly, nothing is 100% safe, other than the treadmill! Glad you have a safe option.
All I can send is hugs. This year is just so hard for everyone in so many ways.
Snow and ice are pretty much nonexistent here. I wouldn’t have the faintest idea how to approach either.
