Cold and Icy and Snowy, Oh My!

It was a cold, snowy and icy week here in Northeast Ohio. We didn’t get a lot of snow, but each day it seemed I woke up to a new dusting of snow and/or ice. The days were cold, too — most days were in the 20s, and I woke up to weather in the teens for my runs. The cold, combined with the days of somewhat slippery/icy roads, made for not the best running weather. I think it’s safe to say that it’s not even February, but I’m over winter.

I can’t really complain, though. The kids LOVE the snow. And, even if it’s snowy in the morning, I don’t have to drive anywhere for my commute at the time being. And, I have Yaktrax for the icy days, and when it’s too icy, that’s what the treadmill is for, right?

Also, it could always be colder! Check out the temps my parents had earlier in the week — BRR!

Here’s what our week looked like:

Sunday: 5.07 miles outdoor run plus a 2ish mile snowy walk with the family

Monday: 5.25 miles on the dreadmill and then another 2ish mile walk with the family – I had the day off and we went to our local nature center and lakes and walked around there

Tuesday: 5.5 miles on the dreadmill (still too slippery for running)

Wednesday: 5.14 miles outside! I made sure to wear my Yaktrax

Thursday: 5 miles outside – again with the Yaktrax

Friday: 5.2 miles outside – finally was okay not to wear my Yaktrax and it felt great to be in my good old sneakers again

Saturday: 5.02 miles outside and 2 mile walk outside with the family. We met up with B’s parents for a socially distant, masked up, chilly walk and it was GREAT!

Weekly mileage: 36.18 mi

Days run in a row as part of my running streak: 282

I can’t believe it’s just 2.5 weeks until I’ll hit 300! I am wondering if i will – some days the cold, snow and ice makes me want to just stay inside all day and not move. But I do always feel better after a run!

Some questions for you:

  • Are you doing any running streaking right now?
  • How do you stay motivated to run in the winter or when the weather’s not great?

I’m linking up with Deborah and Kim for the Weekly Run Down.

  1. Honestly it is really hard to stay the course in winter. I haven’t been able to run outside for the past two weeks and I don’t see that changing anytime soon, so I had to switch from working on speed to just maintaining fitness – not the most exciting thing lol. My joke is that my fitness goal for right now is to watch TV (while running on the treadmill). I’ve never done a streak but just because it’s feeling good I’ve been running 6 days a week instead of 5 which means there were only 5 days in January that I didn’t run, so that’s kind of got me thinking about it. I don’t know when I’ll be eligible for the vaccine but maybe I’ll do a streak between the two doses!

  2. We have also has some super cold and windy days lately. Once I am out there, I really love it. For me, it’s way better than summer heat. Will be a little more challenging this week w icy conditions around. Way to get some great mileage in this week

  3. Wow, your run streak is amazing! I’ve been chickening out when our temps are in the 20s, but my excuse is that it feels colder when it’s dark out (my window for exercise). I know it’s just an excuse.

  4. Your run streak is truly impressive. Not only are you getting outside (some days) in the cold, but you’re running 5 miles each time, when just one mile would count. What’s your goal- 300? 365? Or are you just going to go until you decide it’s time to stop.
The pictures of your and the kids out walking are great. We live in Florida and my kids constantly complain that they wished we lived somewhere with snow! Glad your kids enjoy it.

  5. Oh, look at all the snow! Your kiddos look like they are having a blast!

Even when it’s cold and awful here, getting out and about is still manageable, so I don’t struggle with motivation too too often. I just keep getting outside and going.

No run streak for me, but you’re doing great!

  6. I’m fitness streaking-doing some sort of exercise daily. I can’t run streak due to coming off the injury, it’s not good for my body to run too much at the moment. I can’t wait until I get back to being able to do so though!

Winter is my favorite time to run because it’s so nice here in Florida- my motivation waxes and wanes over the summer when it’s hot and miserable down here. Usually if I have a race on my schedule that keeps me motivated, but with the absence of races, I enjoy taking on mileage challenges and group challenges with my running group. Makes it interesting to have fun competition!

  7. Your run streak is amazing! Huge congrats on sticking with it, especially this time of year. My run streak was over and done on New Year’s Day, but I have been doing an “outdoor activity” streak for awhile. I’m not really sure when it officially began, but I did all my streak runs outdoors, and those began on Thanksgiving. Since then, I have either run or walked outside for 20-30 minutes a day. Keep it up!!!

  8. Cute little trail blazers!
I agree that a day feels better after a run, but some days it’s just impossible (apartment, no treadmill and not ready to go back to the gym). Your streak is amazing!
