And just like that it got COLD

BRR it is cold here! And by cold, I mean in the 40s/50s, which means in 2 months I’ll be dreaming of this “balmy” weather. Sigh – I  know I’m a cold baby, meaning I love heat and can’t stand the cold. But after last week’s temps in the 80s, this week’s drop 30-40 degrees felt intense!

The good news is that the weather didn’t impact my running too much. We had some rainy days but most of my runs stayed clear, and I even felt pretty good during most of them. Despite having a hard time getting out of the house when I’m cold, once I’m out, I feel pretty good! My only hiccup this week was feeling sick on Wednesday morning. I think it was a reaction to my covid shot, which I got Wednesday. But other than that, the week went well!

Here’s what the week entailed:

Sunday:  7.01 miles GM woke up EARLY (before 6 a.m.), and I was tired. I knew that I needed to get in a longer-ish run to get my brain working and feeling good. Thankfully, after B got up, I was able to get in a 7 mile run that felt great! Despite being tired, the cool air woke me up and I felt like I was flying. And it started looking like fall!

fall

Monday: 6.38 miles total run plus core workout and 1.12 mi walk.  I was tired Monday morning, but got out of bed in time to get in a core workout and 5 mile run. I also got in a walk with GM before it was time to go to work. Then, I took the kids to xc, so I was also able to get in another run, bringing my total to 6.38 miles. It is crazy the dip in temps – last Monday’s practice was in the 80s and everyone was in tank tops, etc. This week was in the low 50s and we started with sweatshirts!

Tuesday: 5.14 mi run plus core workout and 1.82 mile walk. I took GM out for a walk after the school bus again, and it was cold. He actually kept complaining about the cold, .

Wednesday: 3.47 miles run plus core workout and 2.3 mi walk I almost didn’t get in any workouts Wednesday so I’m extra grateful this happened! I had my COVID shot scheduled for Tuesday afternoon and by Tuesday night I wasn’t feeling that well. Sure enough, I got a bad headache and a fever and tossed and turned most of Tuesday night. I went outside Wed. morning to run and made it to the end of my block before heading home to get back into bed. I nursed the fever for a few more hours when it finally broke and by later in the day I was better! I went for a walk/run later in the day and was glad to feel better.

Thursday: 4 miles run and 4 miles walking.  Remember my no snooze challenge a few weeks ago where my goal was to be downstairs by 4:45 a.m.? Well somehow on Thursday when I looked at my watch, it was 5:05 a.m. so I had snoozed for more than 30 min without realizing it! Whoops. By the time I was dressed and ready for my run, I only had 40 minutes and decided to just get in 4 miles. I also had a walking date with a former coworker before work, so it was great to get in 3 miles of walking with her. The weather wasn’t as cold as it had been and the rain mostly held off for our walk and catch up. Then, I got in a quick 1 mile walk in the afternoon.

Friday: 5.1 mi run and ~1 mile walk. I was able to sleep in and get in a nice 5 miler during daylight, but that was all I had time for before starting my workday. The weather ended up sunny most of the day, and not as cold as it had been so it was nice to be able to enjoy some time outdoors.

Saturday: 4.01 mile rainy run. I woke up to cold and rain, but it was only drizzling when I made it outside. I didn’t mind the wetness – it was kinda peaceful, and with my running raingear and hat on, plus a great audiobook, I enjoyed the solitude. I found some trails near me for more leaf coverage above my head, and had a good run/walk in the rain and mud.

Total mileage: 35.11 mi

Questions for you:

  • How are the fall colors near you?
  • Do you run better when it starts to get cool out?

  1. I was amazed at how quickly the weather changed! I do run better in the cooler weather. But I miss the warmth too.

I react to the Covid vaccine every time I get it. I had #6 a few weeks ago. Thankfully, the reaction is only about 24 hours.

  2. This is the weather that makes me happy. I had the same reaction to the vaccine as you did seems different this time. Looks like a good week for you

  3. Your fall colors look so pretty!

Fall is my favorite time for running but I know the days of having to add layers are coming!

I’ve been lucky with the covid shots. I got my new one on Friday and while my arm hurt a LOT I never got a fever.

  4. Well… for all my complaining about the heat, I know I couldn’t take your winters. But I’m definitely envious of your fall weather! Yes, it’s much, much easier to run in cooler weather. Nice job getting out there for all those miles! It’s hard to get up early when it’s cold, dark and rainy.

  5. I do love summer but yes, I run better when it’s cold.

Due to all our rain, they says the colors aren’t great. I’ve haven’t had time to fully explore.

You had a very consistent week with lots of runs.

  6. No doubt, I love the heat, but I do run pretty decent in the fall temps also. It was damp and icky in Iowa all last week, and I had to remember the layering game, LOL, with my outdoor gear.
