Slowly Getting Back To Running

For those of you that have been following along, I haven’t been running as much as I usually do. If you follow me on Instagram or Snapchat (@koskim), you’ve likely noticed fewer running posts and stories.

I’ve been having issues with my piriformis. It started the week after Fourth of July with a tightness in my lower back/glutes and I thought that maybe going for a run on it would help loosen it up. Instead, that day it hurt to walk. A lot. And since then, I’ve been hobbling around and limping, not quite sure how to get better.

Thanks to the Internet, a coworker and my brother-in-law who is a doctor, I self diagnosed myself with piriformis syndrome and took it upon myself to STRETCH, REST, massage, foam roll and take some NSAIDs.  Oh, and of course – not run.

This is how I feel stretching …. I’M SO inflexible!:

It has been a long few weeks. The first week I did nothing at all. I have to admit, I was grumpy and not in the best of moods.

The next week I started slowly doing other things – walking a little more and the elliptical.

The next week – I started running again! And by running, I mean no more than one mile and stretching before and after.

And then this week, I did a few more runs and they were longer! Sunday I did 2.54 miles and Thursday I did 3.25 miles! I admit it wasn’t 100% pain free. It wasn’t fast (even though I was out of breath!). But it felt amazing to be outside again and running.

I wouldn’t say I’m back. Not yet – it will be a longer road to recovery than I thought. BUT I’m getting there.

So, here’s to hoping that I’m on the road to recovery and will be back to my running self soon.

Some questions for you:

  • Has anyone else suffered piriformis issues? Any tips?
  • When you don’t run or exercise does it affect your mental state/mood?

Weekend with the Grandparents

My parents were in town this weekend! This was the longest they’ve spent in Cleveland – they came into town Wednesday night and left early Sunday morning, so I had 3 full days with them and FW. It was great!

So, what do we do when the grandparents are in town?

We celebrate!

How?

First, with tacos and patio drinks at Barrio. FW was on his best behavior.IMG_20160803_204630

And plenty of delocius takeout. Sushi one night (with Anson and Celia!) And Taza the next. LOVE me some Lebanese.

IMG_20160806_214921
And during the day, walks to Farmers Markets with live music. Public Square has a brand new market now that goes Thursdays through fall. You should check it out!20160804_103742

We also went for a few long walks. Down to the Flats …20160804_110737

Down to the lake  (with a stop for FW to eat) …20160804_142525

And to the river. 20160806_114252

We of course had some playtime.

Pedicures with mom.  And wine.

I also took advantage of them being in town by spending some alone time – I did some meal prep (yay for roasting veggies for lunches!) AND went for FOUR runs. That’s right – that’s more running than I’ve been able to do in forever. And since I was officially cleared to run earlier in the week, I was so happy to be out there. It is hard for me to run during the week days now because of FW, so I made sure to get in as much mileage as I wanted. I got in 3.8 miles Thursday, 4.3 miles Friday, 5 miles Saturday and even 4 miles Sunday morning. I’m definitely out of shape and slower than I was this time last year, but I don’t care – it’s just great to be back!

And even though B was out of town for the weekend, Thursday night we took advantage of having my parents in town and spent the night to ourself! It was our first night out since FW was born – and even though I constantly thought of FW and missed him, it was great. We had amazing food and drinks at Alley Cat down by the water.

Dessert was Cathy’s cookies. An amazing ice cream sandwich that was HUGE and so worth it.IMG_20160804_213206

Followed by a pretty walk home. I really am loving the new Public Square – even the fountains light up at night! If you follow me on Snapchat or Instagram (@koskim on both) you probably saw the light/water show. Who wants to be our next babysitter?

IMG_20160804_224103

My parents left Sunday morning and FW and I had the day to ourselves before B came home that night. We’ll be seeing them in less than a month, though, when we introduce FW to his New York (my side of the) family!

Some questions for you:

  • How often do you have date night?
  • If you had suddenly one hour to spend to yourself, what’s the first thing you would do? I guess I’d go for a run and take a shower 🙂 Life post-baby has changed me! Next on my list – mani/pedi, bake, blog …

Per usual, I’m linking up with ErinKatie and the weekly wraps.

Beer Is Good For You

It was another truly beautiful weekend in CLE. It was SO good to have B around – his first week back at work went smoothly for all of us, but it is so so much easier and more enjoyable for all of us with him around.

So what did we do? Well, in no order … (seriously, no order. This is not a summary of Friday through Sunday- trying something new here)

We took a walk and enjoyed great views like this one:

I wore FW around – I’m liking this baby wearing thing!

20160714_163038

We hung out with this little guy. I’m sorry in advance to all of you who follow me on Snapchat or Insta (@koskim on both) – for the abundance of baby snaps, videos, etc. I can’t get enough of him.20160716_180553

And this one. He is just too cute after his bath!

bathtime

B and I enjoyed some delicious food and drink. It only took me 3 days to finish this iced decaf 🙂20160715_082908

And I drank a whole half of this grapefruit beer. Baby steps. And speaking of babies – did you know beer is GOOD FOR YOU when you’re breastfeeding? Yes, it’s obviously in moderation (as in, I drank half of it …) but I read it on the internet. It’s GOOD FOR YOU. 20160716_203044

We tried out a new pizza place Friday night – it was pretty good!20160715_195551

I made French toast Sunday morning while B and FW hung out. Fact: Monk’s apple cinnamon bread makes amazing French toast.

IMG_20160717_111924

Saturday night called for Buffalo chicken salads.20160716_210407

Patio drinks are the best. Don’t they just taste better when they’re outside on a summer day? And it’s a lot easier to take a baby with you to a bar if you sit outside.

20160715_190338

We got in cute photos with the little guy like this one.

20160716_192917

And a family photo.20160716_193058

We checked out what downtown looked like now that the RNC is in town. Check out the layer of barricades going down the street? The republicans AND media have invaded – you see CNN grill in the background? As of a few days ago that said “Hairy Buffalo.”

20160717_123940

Twitter, Bloomberg, MSNBC and Washington Post have all taken over our former neighborhood.20160717_124257

And as usual we enjoyed a great family meal Sunday night at B’s parents. No photos – but imagine a RARE steak (#postpartumeats) and peach cobbler. YUM!

Well, here’s to a good week! Wish me good luck without B here during the days. I hope FW is getting used to life with just me during the days and will be a little less fussy this week.

Some questions for you:

  • What’s something you’re looking forward to this week?
  • Meat eaters-  how do you like your meat? Rare? Well done?

Per usual, I’m linking up today with ErinKatie and the weekly wraps.

It’s Been One Week … (Yes, we had that baby)

One week ago, our lives changed completely. We went from being just B and me to being a family of three. FW was born last Thursday afternoon. He and the whole family are healthy and doing well (despite lacking some serious sleep).

I’ll spare you all the super detailed details, and in true fashion of how we shared we were expecting, here are some of the FAQs:

Okay, we want to know – boy or girl?!

It’s a boy!

20160623_161734

When was he born?

FW waited until after the Cavs win and parade celebration and came into the world June 23, 2016. Just like his mom when she was born, he was 2 days late (I was due on Jan 21 and born Jan 23).

Snapchat-9040509393639143755

About 24 hours before he was born, his mom and dad were at the Cavs parade celebrating the city’s win!

What were the basic details – height, weight, etc.

He’s just a little guy! 6 lb. 12.5 oz and 19.5 inches. OR 19 inches. It depends on who you ask.

This was taken in the hospital when we were about to take him home!

This was taken in the hospital when we were about to take him home!

Why haven’t you posted any photos of him or any blog posts yet? Is everyone okay? Was he born with 3 heads?

Ha, he was not born with three heads. He has one head, with hair (I LOVE BABIES WITH HAIR!), and is perfect and cute in every way (yes, I’m biased). I’ve been sharing plenty on Snapchat (follow me at @koskim) and will start to share more on other channels as well. And honestly, every time I go to write a blog post, he is awake and I can’t stand not looking at him so I put the computer down and go chill with him. He is sleeping now (it’s daytime – he loves sleeping during the day), and I thought it was time to officially introduce him to the world. So here you go – gratuitous baby photos await!

He even poses in his sleep

He even poses in his sleep

How are you feeling? How is he sleeping?

Judging from what I’ve been told and what I’ve heard from friends, I had a reallllly easy labor. So I’m feeling pretty good for just having a baby. BUT I’m tired. Let’s just say that FW likes sleeping a lot – during the day. At night, well, we’re still teaching him about that.

When was the last time you ran? Are you going to start running again?

I ran/hobbled a mile (before taking a walk) the day before FW was born. IT was a slow and not-so-comfortable mile! And now I need to wait until after 6 weeks to start exercise. It’s rough. Luckily, I’ve felt good enough to take some walks with B and FW, but I can tell that 6 weeks are going to last a while!

Have you had any visitors?

Yes! My parents came in town the minute they heard I was in labor and were here last weekend. B’s family has been by a few times AND he’s gotten a chance to meet a few coworkers. His social calendar is pretty full these days 🙂

Are you still going to live downtown?

Yup, still getting this question – and yes, we’re still in our apartment. We converted the guest room into a nursery and B made this amazing space-saving changing table that is built up to the wall so it doesn’t take up floorspace and FW is loving living downtown. We’ve given him a few tours of our neighborhood and took him out to his first downtown meal this week – we enjoyed some tacos outdoors in the Flats!

Are you going to be a mom blogger now?

Umm, sorta, but not really? I know that’s not a real answer – but I’m going to still blog the way I always blog, about things I know. Baking. Cooking. Running. And now that being a mom (it’s so weird to say that) is part of who I am, here we go – mom blogging awaits! I imagine that I’ll have some more mom-focused blog posts or a mom-spin on my posts moving forward, but when I get back to running in a few months there will be posts about that. When I get some more sleep and can bake and cook again, there will be posts about that. And as I adjust to live as a mom, I imagine there will be fewer posts at times as I enjoy every minute of life with baby!

Joining up today with the Thinking Out Loud linkup. Because I’ve had writer’s block and it seems appropriate that this post be a flood of thoughts!

Warning – there may be typos in this post. My brain is a little tired from the lack of REM sleep … (as if there weren’t typos in the other posts on here)

Three Weekends In One

What a weekend.  It was fun, tiring and a whirlwind of activity.  I need a weekend to recover I think!

If I had to sum up my weekend, I’d say it was like 3 weekends in one. I feel like I had enough going on to fill three weekends – and it was great!

The weekend started Friday night, with a dinner date and comedy show. B and had tickets to a 9:30 show (late for 8 month pregnant me) to see one of our favorite comica, Sebastian Maniscalco. We started off with a late dinner at Cowell & Hubbard, splitting cheese and a few appetizers.

our Cowell & Hubbard assortment

And then the show. We’ve seen Sebastian several times throughout the years at Hilarities, but he has gotten bigger now (he was even on Seinfeld’s Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee) and even though he was playing at a different, bigger venue, we almost didn’t get tickets in time!

Saturday morning started early with a 5 am alarm- B and I were headed to the airport to fly to Boston for the day to celebrate our anniversary! It was a great, but quick trip and we were able to get in a lot of walking (nearly 30,000 steps) and see many of our old favorite places (we met in Boston in college). From Beacon Hill to the Boston Common to the Public Gardens to Newbury Street to Faneuil Hall to Fenway to the Isabella Gardner Museum, I’d say we hit nearly everything.

We even got in a celebrity sighting- we were told we couldn’t post photos on social media but I did share info to my Snapchat story (@koskim). Here’s a hint- he was promoting Walhburgers and his name rhymes with Bark 🙂

We ended the day with a great Italian meal in the North End, complete with cannoli, tiramisu and coffee of course.

Sunday started early again- we had to fly back to Cleveland first thing, as I was emceeing a board event Sunday at lunch time. I’m the Vice President of the Phi Beta Kappa Association of Cleveland, and Sunday was our annual scholarship banquet. I had the pleasure of speaking and announcing the names of all the student award recipients. Brought me back to my days of high school awards events!

20160501_142951

We finally made it home Sunday evening and I am so grateful for B who could tell I was pooped and volunteered to make dinner. I was so worn out that even after 3 nights out, he could have convinced me to order pizza….shh don’t tell him I said that!

And that was my weekend. Not relaxing in the least, but fun.

Some questions for you:

  1. Do you tend to have good or bad flight karma?
  2. Do you have a favorite comedian?
  3. Have you ever been to Boston?

I’m linking up today with ErinKatie and the weekly wraps.

WIAW: Cookies and Zoodles – it’s all about balance!

Happy What I Ate Wednesday! Here is a typical day … why is it typical? Because I had zoodles for lunch and cookies for a midnight snack. It’s all about a balance right?

The morning I started my day with my usual. I’m so predictable. Egg whites and veggies all the way! If you like something, why mess with it, right? OH and we had a new bag of pistachios at the office so I had a few of those with my eggs.

20150416_083628

Lunch was leftovers! I had made some zoodles in an avocado pesto sauce for dinner the night before, so I enjoyed that with plenty of snap peas. AND kombucha! My first time trying this flavor. It was okay, made the kombucha even earthier than usual.

20150416_130014 20150416_131210

Snacks during the day included:

Carrots and unsalted mixed nuts

carrots

carrots

Some homemade granola (I get on granola-making binges sometimes and can’t stop. Which is good because I love eating it and sharing it!

20150416_193251

I had to work somewhat late so B made dinner! And what a dinner it was. Steak (cooked just the way I like it – medium rare), avocado, asparagus and broccoli. I am back to eating meat and this was the first steak I’d had in at least 3 months.

20150416_190759

After dinner, I got down to baking business. Which is what I like to do — except for some reason these cookies took me 2 hours to make. Whoops! It meant a late night – and late night of cookie tasting as well. I finished off my evening with a few of these peanut butter oatmeal cookie bars:

I didn't eat the whole plate ...

I didn’t eat the whole plate …

So so good!

Today’s linkup is with another Cleveland-dweller, Clean Eats, Fast Feets!

Some questions for you:

  • Do you eat the same thing for breakfast every day? What is it?
  • Do you like kombucha? Any flavor or brand recommendations?
  • How do you like your steak? Medium? Rare? Overcooked? Not at all?

Training Tuesday: Not-so-planned week and a sick run

Welp, it was another week of training and not that great of a week. It was the first week I didn’t get in my long run as planned. On the plus side, I DID get to meet some of the CLE marathon ambassadors this week and came home with some fun swag! Screen Shot 2015-04-12 at 6.51.31 PM This week: Screen Shot 2015-04-12 at 6.17.19 PM Monday: On the schedule – 4 miles. Actual run: 5-ish miles outdoors. B and I were still in San Francisco, so it was great to have a vacation run. We ran through the Golden Gate Park, which is only about 1/2 mile from my brother’s place – how lucky! The park is beautiful and it was a gorgeous day out, there were so many people out and about running, walking, etc.

Loving running in Golden Gate

Loving running in Golden Gate

Tuesday: On the schedule – 40 minute tempo run. Actual run: On about 3 hours of sleep on a redeye flight, I somehow managed to get on the treadmill for a tempo run. It wasn’t a great one, but I did it! 20150407_104824 Wednesday: On the schedule –  3 miles. Actual run: 4.8 miles with my running buddies! It was the first time the three of us ladies were back running together and it was a foggy but fun morning run.

So much fog!

So much fog!

Thursday: Rest. Actual run: none! I did about 55 minutes on the elliptical and that was it. I did happen to notice that my shoes were in my issue of Runners World – how cool is that? They’re famous!

Friday: 4 miles, pace. Actual run: 4 NOT pace miles. Normally I would’ve done 1/2-1 mile warm up and cool down but today wasn’t great. I knew that today pace would not happen. I kept it up, but still went a lot slower than I thought I would/could – by the end I was just trying to keep up at a somewhat not-so-slow pace (not fast pace). I started to wonder if I was getting sick… Saturday: 9 miles. Actual run: 7 barely moving miles with B. Yup. I was sick. I had to stop and cough about every mile, and was having trouble keeping my breathing up. The good news is I made it about 7 miles, thanks to B pushing me – which is better than I thought I would make it – I thought I’d stop after one! From my instagram (follow me at @koskim!) Screen Shot 2015-04-12 at 7.02.42 PM

Sunday: Off day. Actual run: None! I woke up feeling sick and had a slight fever so I stayed in bed most of the day. I ended up catching the Indians game and returning to the couch. So yeah, not much action. Didn’t even break 6,000 steps!

how i feel

A questions for you:

  • Do you run when you’re sick? I try to get in some activity – I’m glad I got in some running on Saturday and trying not to be disappointed it wasn’t the 9 I had hoped for/planned. Though, I did have a fever Saturday night so I’m guessing my body was telling me something and it’s okay I didn’t run.
