Tuesdays on the Run: Bringing Up My Mileage

This week was actually a pretty good week in terms of running! I got in quite a few miles – including both outdoor and indoor runs this week – and got up to my 2nd highest mileage week since LM and 2nd fastest run!

I’m feeling pretty encouraged by the week. While my daily miles are still pretty low (3-5ish miles most often), I’ve felt pretty good most days. I probably could go more if I had some more time, too. AND even found myself going pretty fast (for post-baby me) on Friday’s run.

Some highlights:

Sunday’s stroller run was not only with FW and B and LM, but also with our niece and nephew.

Friday’s run’s average page was 9:16/mi – my fastest run since I’ve had LM, minus the 5k race I did a month or so ago.

Here’s a look at my splits:

It really was the best run I’ve had in a while! (For comparison, the run we did on Sunday with the strollers and our niece and nephew was close to 11 min/miles)

I finally feel like I’m slowly getting back into running shape. Am I as fast as I was last year at this time? Not at all. But between getting not much sleep, nursing (it dehydrates me and takes a toll!), and how busy work has been (not to mention trying to manage our new life with 2 kids), I’m just happy to be where I am.

Some questions for you:

  • Do you run in the morning or at night?
  • Have you been running inside? Outside? Both?

Tuesdays on the Run: Sick Week

Well, just as last week was a GREAT week for running, this week was not so great. It ended alright, but I started off the week with a cold that – combined with 2 kids and little sleep – knocked me out!

Often times, I’ll try to power through a run when I’m sick. This week, however, all I wanted to do was sleep! I finally felt a little better Wednesday, but LM woke up at 2:30 a.m. (after also being up at midnight with me) and just wouldn’t go back to sleep until nearly 7 a.m. (and FW got up at 6:30). I decided that running on 2.5 hours of sleep and being sick wasn’t the best idea, and thus the low mileage this week.

It wasn’t all bad this week, though – I got to do my first race since LM was born! Having only been cleared to run for a little over 4 weeks, I had no real time goals in mind and just wanted to run the whole time. I’m proud to say not only did I run the entire time, but it was my fastest run in ages!

Me and my cheering squad at the race

Some questions for you:

  • Do you prefer running at night or morning?
  • Have you done a nighttime race?

Tuesdays on the Run – Best Week in a While

It was a GREAT week or me last week in terms in terms of running – I reached 20+ miles total for the week for the first time in a while! Woohoo! Excuse me while I do a happy dance.

And also, while I take a nap after that dance. Because I’ve been sick so I actually haven’t run since last Friday (womp womp),

So, while last week was pretty amazing (for me) in terms of running, I’m expecting much fewer mileage this week.

In the meantime, here are some photo highlights of last week’s runs:

A run/walk with LM

FW and I after Sunday’s stroller run

Highlights from the run … while my pace isn’t where it used to be, I’m hopefully getting there!

Some questions for you:

  • When was the last time you were sick?
  • Any tips for stroller running- what TO do or NOT to do?

Tuesdays on the Run: Getting Better?

This week was actually a pretty good week in terms of running! I got in quite a few miles – including both outdoor and indoor runs – and got up to my highest mileage week since LM.

Some highlights:

The week started off with a family run – B, FW, LM and I!

I got in 2 stroller runs- one with FW and my first with LM!

I got in my most weekly miles since LM was born. More than 17!

I ran by myself on Friday! No stroller or anything. My goal was under 10 minutes miles and I barely made it.

It’s safe to say that I’m slowly getting back into running shape. Is it easy? No. But, I’m trying to be patient and just enjoy these runs and my last few weeks of maternity leave!

Some questions for you:

  • How many miles do you run in a week?
  • What is your favorite running weather?

Tuesdays on the Run – Slow and Steady

Another week of postpartum running has come and gone and it went a little better than last week. Did I get in more mileage or any outdoor runs? No … but I did feel better on most of my runs, so I’ve got to believe that I’m slowly improving!

Most of those were walk/runs and all were done on the treadmill while LM was taking a nap. So some were running – feed LM – go back to running – put a pacifier in her mouth – go back to running, etc. But I’m happy to be able to get them in while I’m home with her. I hope to soon be able to go for a run in the morning before B and FW leave the house – but not sure when that will be. I need to get some more sleep at night first!

Some questions for you:

  • Mommas – how do you it in runs with kids?
  • How often do you run on a treadmill?

7 Weeks Postpartum and Getting Back into Running

Well, it’s been 7+ weeks since LM was born and last week I got the official okay to start running again from my doctor. And let me tell you something – it has been hard. For some reason, this time around it is much harder to get back into running than it was after I had FW. I’m trying not to compare myself to last time, but I can’t help but feel a little discouraged that I’m not getting in the mileage or times I was with him.

That being said, I had the most miles this week than I’ve had in a while. That’s thanks to getting in some treadmill walk/runs while LM sleeps in the morning (and after FW goes to school) M-W, and then a family run on Saturday! Here’s how the week looked:

The 3.33 miler on Saturday kicked my butt! It was hot (but not as hot as it had been).

I pushed FW while B pushed LM and he took a pic of the three of us afterwards.

I did stop to walk twice, but made it up one of our hills without walking.

LM was ready for her first run 🙂

I hope that this week is just as good and I’m able to get in some more runs. It’s going to be a busy one – we have B’s sister’s wedding on Friday and Thursday is the rehearsal and my parents are coming into town again, so I don’t know how much free time I’ll have for runs. It’s hard enough as it is with 2 kids now, so we’ll see!

Some questions for you:

  • How many days a week do you typically run?
  • Parents with multiple kids – did you find your recovery after each kid different?

Getting Back Into Running After a Baby

Getting back into running after having a baby is HARD. And I know that it’s going to be harder for me this time around because I wasn’t as active. Yes, I still ran/walked throughout the entire pregnancy, but with FW, I was literally running up until the day before he was born. With LM, the runs were much more walk/runs, so I expect that my return to running will be somewhat similar.

With B and FW after “running” the Cleveland Marathon 5k. I looked a little rougher after the next day’s 10k! Both were done while 39 weeks pregnant.

After running a 5k while pregnant with FW. I ran much more with him!

That being said – I’m getting ready to be back! The weather for the most part has been nice and I am seeing people out running all the time while I’m on maternity leave. And I yearn to be them – running, outside and free!

This week, I did a few walk/runs on the treadmill, in addition to my daily walks with LM outside. I was able to do them on the treadmill while she napped beside me, and were all taken VERY easy, as I’m still a few weeks out from my 6 week check-up. How easy? Let’s say that my first day my goal was to run a mile at a 12 min/mile pace. And it felt HARD.

Here’s how the week looked. In terms of steps:

Monday: 4.3 miles – ran/walk on treadmill

Tuesday: 3.6 miles – ran/walk on treadmill

Wednesday: 3.6 miles – ran/walk on treadmill

Saturday: 1.92 miles total … 95+ degree temps and me being alone with the kids for the afternoon meant not much activity during the day. But when B got home at night, I was really feeling the urge to get out there. Was it super hot and humid? Yes. But after being home alone with the 2 kids for the afternoon, it felt GREAT to run outside for the first time in more than a month! I only did just under 2 miles, but was happy to be out there.

As you can see, it’s not much. BUT – if I can keep it up and continue to run/walk a few times a week, I hope to be back running running soon!!

Some questions for you:

  • How long after you gave birth did you start running again?
  • Was it super hot and humid near you this weekend?
