Weekly Run Down: Virtual 5K and 10K Training

I know that it’s October and fall officially began a few weeks ago, but WOW, it has been warm. It has been in the upper 70s all week, and while I’m not eager for winter to be here, I don’t mind the warm weather when I’m not running!

Luckily, I’ve been able to get outside when it’s not too hot and I had another good-ish week of running. Why the -ish? Well, I’m still nowhere close to where I have been or was before pregnancy (or even where I was at this point postpartum after my first kid), but I’m so happy to be out there! I’m grateful to be (so far) injury free, able to run during the day when I want and enjoy daylight (since I’m on maternity leave), and I even got in a virtual 5K this week AND a 6 miler that made me confident enough to run the Cleveland Marathon 10K in a few weeks.

Here’s what the full week looked like:

Sunday:  4.02 miles

Monday: Virtual 5K race, followed by some fall fun at the apple and pumpkin orchard

Tuesday:  4.18 miles. And there were so. many. puddles! Luckily it didn’t end up raining much during the run, but it was wet/humid.

Wednesday:  3.17 miles

Thursday:  Took the day off! Instead of a run, I got in a nice, leisurely 3.5 mile stroller walk with GM.

Friday:  6.33 miles EARLY. I was up at 3:30 with GM and after he took an hour to get back to sleep, I decided to just go out for a run and get in my 10K before the day started. It felt pretty good – I was tired and it was dark, but I feel confident now that *fingers crossed* I should be all set for the Cleveland Marathon 10K in just two weeks!

Saturday:  3.14 miles – I did a little bit on some local trails and it was muddy and fun and exactly what I needed (and then a 3ish mile walk with the family, including my parents!)

TOTAL for the week:  ~24 miles running, plus some walks, stretching and DR abs

Questions for you:

  • Do you run in the dark?
  • Did it rain near you this week? It was supposed to rain here all week but never really did!

  1. Yep, pretty much all my runs except the weekend are in the dark, and are ending in the dark too. Luckily I’ve got a great rechargeable headlamp and pretty good street lights on my route.

Another great week for you. You set a high bar for post-partum running!

  2. Not much rain here…it seems like it’s been raining everywhere else, though. You probably know I run in the dark, almost more than I do in the daylight LOL. I’m comfortable with it, and it’s what I have to do with my work schedule (and because I hate the treadmill yadda yadda yadda).

  3. I’m not a fan of running in the dark, but I’ll do it if I have to. The shorter days make some dark runs a necessity. I can see how it would be great for you to get out there super early before the kids are up.
I think you’ll definitely be ready for the 10k! You’re doing a great job of getting yourself back in shape- postpartum running can be challenging but you’re basically killing it.

  4. Same with us in the DC area – we were expecting rain all week, but it didn’t amount to much.

Good for you for getting out early for your run since you were already up with the baby. I actually love running in the dark. It’s so tranquil and peaceful. In fact, I almost prefer it to running after dawn.
