SNOW my goodness

Winter is far from over here in Northeast Ohio. After getting 15+ inches a few weeks ago, we were hit again with more snow storms Sunday and Monday. I had planned for getting in a nice outdoor run for my birthday (which was Sunday), but when I woke up it was snowing pretty heavily so I opted to go on the treadmill. It ended up also snowing Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. Not a lot of snow – an inch or so each time, but each of those inches adds up and with that much snow, I haven’t run outside in I can’t recall how long.

The week included some indoor workouts, thanks to the cold and snow and ice:

Sunday: 5 treadmill miles +  2ish mile snowy walk + abs for my birthday workout 🙂

Monday: 4.06 treadmill miles

Tuesday: 5 treadmill miles + a snowy walk + abs

This girl doesn’t mind the old and snow, most of the time!

Wednesday: 5 treadmill miles

Thursday: 4.6 treadmill miles

Friday:  4.75 treadmill miles + some kettlebells

Saturday:    REST DAY! I went for a walk and still managed to get in my step goal (11,000 steps) without a run.

Total mileage:  28.44 miles

Where I spent most of my week

I’m realllllly getting tired of the weather, but I am glad I have gotten in my treadmill workouts each day. Plus, I’m keeping up my goal of doing something besides running most weeks. Even if it’s planks, additional ab workouts or even a few kettlebells, it’s better than nothing!

Questions for you:

  • What’s your least favorite season for running?
  • How do you fit in activities besides running into your schedule? By the time I get off the treadmill in the morning, it’s usually time to get showered and get my kids up for school.

Way to stay active this week and get in some good runs despite the weather. Per your questions, I do not run 2 consecutive days and I alternate with strength and cycling. For me, it works well.

Winter is definitely my least favorite season, due more to the extreme cold than the snow or ice. That said, I do like the change of seasons. I know I’d miss it if I didn’t have easy access (LOL) to it. Great job fitting in some non-running fitness into your schedule!! For myself, I’m just so accustomed to doing non-running stuff, that I don’t have much guilt skipping a run, now and then, and subbing-in something else if the outdoor conditions are risky.

I agree, it’s hard to fit everything else in. When you’ve got kids, a job, and a running schedule, when are you supposed to do all the strength, foam rolling, stretching, etc? Right now it’s easy for me because I’m only running every other day- but I definitely struggle with it when I’m running more. I would say fit in little strength workouts throughout the day- but it can start to feel overwhelming. Sounds like you’re doing a good job!

It’s great that your treadmill is an option when it’s snowy out. I’ve been trying to split my workout time between strength and cardio. When I run, I like to do 3-5 miles, but when I’m on my indoor bike 20-30 min is plenty. Working from home gives me much more time for it all.

If I had that weather Be on the treadmill too. Living in the Phoenix area of Arizona summer is my worst time of year. It’s hot all night long so there’s never a comfortable time to run. So here winter is the best time of year to run. I give you Kudos getting on the treadmill everyday, juggling family and weather. Run on, better weather will be here soon. Stay warm and safe

I would stay inside with those icicles too!

So I love winter running, but in Florida, it’s actually pleasant in the winter. I kind of hate August-November – it’s supposed to be fall, but it’s just still so hot and humid, so everything is miserable and you sweat buckets, and everyone else gets “cool” and “chilly” and “brisk.”
