Annapolis Eats: Fish+Ice Cream

Happy Wednesday! I’m back again for What I Ate Wednesday (WIAW). It’s been a while since I’ve shared some of my eats, and since I just got back from a trip to Annapolis, I thought it’d be fun to share some of the food we ate in Annapolis.

Before I show you some of the pictures, I’ll share with you my goals going into the trip:

  1. Taste the local beer.
  2. Eat plenty of local fish. Especially crab and oysters.
  3. Eat ice cream. Every day if possible.

Spoiler alert – I got to do ALL of the above! Successful vacation in my opinion. Here’s some of the goodness:

Ice cream.

Oysters.

Fish boil.

More ice cream.

More oysters.

GIANT crab cake.

Breakfast hash with CRAB.

Crab soup. Not pictured, sadly. But here’s a picture of one of the few non-crab or ice cream dishes I had- french toast!

Some questions for you:

  • Have you been to Annapolis?
  • What’s your favorite flavor of ice cream?
  • Do you like crab?

WIAW: Fruit at Every Meal

I’m back to eating a ton of fruit again. I can’t help it – there’s so much good fruit in season and so much local fruit at farmers markets that I can’t help myself! And you’ll see that in today’s What I Ate Wednesday. I had fruit at every single meal.

Breakfast was a spinach banana muffin and  a few bites of cheese that I ate while putting together FW’s lunch, and then a peach when I got into the office.

My midmorning snack was a big cup of fruit salad (see – more fruit!) and some of these sourdough crackers. I LOOOOVE sourdough bread, and my coworker gave me these delicious crackers. They are so good! And Le Cracker is a local company!

Lunch was some leftovers from dinner – a homemade vegan chickpea patty, some sweet potato fries, zucchini, avocado and a handful of cherries.

And my afternoon snack to tide me over until a late afternoon/early evening meeting? You guessed it – more fruit! I had a nectarine and some cashews.

I had to present at a meeting that didn’t start until 4:30, so I knew that I’d be home late for dinner. So I decided to try out a new slow cooker recipe, Sriracha Peanut Chicken. It was pretty good – I followed the recipe for the most part but used fresh peppers and onions, homemade peanut butter, breasts instead of thighs (and only 1 lb) and a lot more sriracha.

I liked it but it isn’t one of my (or B’s) top 3 slow cooker meals so I’ll add it to the rotation but we probably won’t have it for a little while. (Confession – one thing I’ve started doing as a working mom is trying to incorporate a crockpot meal at least once a week. It makes my life so much easier!) I served it on top of some cauliflower rice. Oh, where’s the fruit you ask? I forgot to take a photo but in the top right of the photo you can see a tupperware that contained some mango. Yum!

And that was it! I was pooped after dinner and after catching up on emails from my meeting out of the office, I hopped in bed.

Some questions for you:

  • Do you have any favorite slow cooker meals?
  • Are there any fruits you don’t like?

WIAW: Whole Lotta Cherries

YAY for Wednesday! We’re halfway to Friday. That means it’s a good day to share my eats and see what you are all up to and eating as well. I’m BACK finally for What I Ate Wednesday!

The day started with some sweet cherries. Northwest Cherry Growers sent me a lot of cherries to try out last week, and it was great to have some for breakfast (and then again two more times that day …. stay tuned!).

I paired them with a handful of nuts. This photo was taken after I had already eaten a few.

Lunch was some leftovers from my freezer – and they tasted great! A quinoa, black bean, sweet potato, chicken chorizo, pepper salad.

Paired with some more fruit – a nectarine.

In the afternoon, I had some Werthers (not pictured), along with some grapes.

For dinner, B cooked. We had bought some local sausages at Ohio City Provisions, along with local sauerkraut. Of course, I paired it with more cherries (and grapes). And some bread.

And for dessert? I baked some cherry pie bars on Sunday and we had a few leftover, so B and I enjoyed some.

And that was it! Yes, I had cherries 3 times in one day. And they were delicious each time 🙂

Some questions for you:

  • Are you loving cherry season like I am?
  • Yikes, just realized how few veggies I had. How much veggies do you eat?

Day In the Life  (WIAW Working Mom Edition)

For today’s What I Ate Wednesday,  I wanted to share a little “day in the life” action. And since the day technically starts at midnight,  here we go. For today’s WIAW, here was my last Thursday:

1 a.m.: FW is up.  We’ve been trying to night wean him, but since he is sick and didn’t eat much at daycare, I only let him cry a little before I go into his room to feed him. I am back to bed and asleep by 2 a.m.

4:45 a.m.: FW is up again.  I feed him and while he’s eating,  my alarm goes off. I typically wake up around 5 to work out, so after he’s done eating at 5:30ish, I head to the gym to workout. Since I’ve been up a few times, my stomach is a little off, so I grab a bite of a cookie as a pre-workout snack.

5:40-6:35 a.m.: This is my me time before the day begins.  I run 4.2 miles and then cool down for .8 and get to 5 total, which I’m happy about. I finish with a short plank.

6:45 a.m.- 7:05 a.m.: FW luckily hasn’t woken up while I’m working out so I have time to shower and get ready.

7:05 a.m. – 7:40 a.m.: FW and B are up! I usually make B a smoothie  (and save leftovers for FW) but B already has breakfast this morning so I instead use the time to send a few emails, get FW changed, dressed and fed, get his food amd milk ready for daycare, get my and B’s lunches ready  (I had prepped them the night before) and spend some time cuddling with FW before work.

8 a.m.-4 p.m.: work! I eat most of my meals and snacks at my desk, which include:

Breakfast! Plain yogurt, granola bites (cashew clusters), banana and a cutie.

A snack of some dried mangoes and nuts.

Lunch was some roasted sweet potato slices and leftover cabbage and ground chicken stir fry.

And some leftover decaf coconut milk latte because I was getting sleepy in the afternoon.

My day is usually over a little later but I have a meeting out of the office in the afternoon and need to head out early to get there on time. I had a networking event at a place that had drinks and chips. These chips and salsa were great!

5:30-6 p.m.: My meeting was over around 5:30 and then I headed to daycare to pick up FW. I hit some traffic on my way home and didn’t end up getting back to our apartment until after 6.

6:30 p.m.: Since it was so nice out, B and I decided to go out for a walk. It was sunny and somewhat warm and not a bad night for a walk with B and FW.

7:15 p.m.-7:45 p.m.: Got home and put FW to bed. While I was putting FW to bed, B was making dinner! We were having brinner.

7:45 p.m.: Dinnertime. While we ate, we watched the end of Joy, which we had started a few nights earlier. I catch up on emails and finish up some work when the movie is over.

9:45 p.m.: Get to bed.

And that was it- that was my Thursday!

Some questions for you:

  • How often do you have brinner?
  • What time do you get up in the morning?  And go to bed?

WIAW: Holy cannoli, my Little Italy dinner

Ooh I love Italian food. Italian appetizers, meals, desserts, you name it. I love it all. And today’s WIAW features some eats from a night out in Little Italy. Amazingness.

The day started with some yogurt, fruit and granola.

And the rest of the banana from my yogurt was eaten with some homemade peanut butter.

Lunch was late so I first had some mixed nuts.

And then my late lunch included some veggies I had brought in – cauliflower, asparagus and others, along with some goodies from the salad bar at work – shrimp, chickpeas and cheese!

A snack? Clementine. And then it was time for our Little Italy dinner! We got mozzarella sticks as an appetizer.

And mushroom pizza for our main dish. YUM! Wine not pictured but consumed nonetheless 🙂

And then we got my favorite for dessert – cannoli. YUM. One for B and one for me!

And that was my WIAW.

  • Do you like cannoli?
  • What’s your favorite Italian dish?

WIAW: The Wrong Ice Cream!

Today is Wednesday. But it feels like Thursday…which is good, because I’m off Friday for a bachelorette party so today is technically my Thursday as well. It’s pseudo-Thursday because tomorrow (Thursday) is my Friday. Make sense?

Okay, enough confusion. Today’s What I Ate Wednesday features some pretty good food, including treats from a new Mexican restaurant. And some mislabeled ice cream – which I’ve never seen happen before! Here we go…

Breakfast was a smoothie – it’s pretty ugly I know, but it was delicious. It was berry, banana, spinach, oats and brewers yeast.

Lunch was out with some of my coworkers! We went to a new Mexican place in the neighborhood and I had chicken fajitas – they were delicious. The chips and salsa that came with the meal were really good too. The best part? The food came super fast AND I had leftovers!

For a snack, I had some strawberries and pineapple.

And some homemade nut butter.

Dinner that night was great – it was a veggie burger, corn bread (there were more pieces eaten than this one) and a quinoa salad I made – it was quinoa, asparagus, peas, broccoli and feta.

For dessert, I had bought Mitchell’s peanut butter chocolate chunk ice cream at the store. Imagine my surprise when I opened up the pint and it was NOT the right ice cream! That, my friends, is a chocolate ice cream-  not peanut butter. 😦 Luckily B likes chocolate ice cream but I was pretty bummed it wasn’t the one I was jonesing for. I guess it got mislabeled?

I ended up finishing off the day with some Halo Top instead (unpictured). And B enjoyed the ice cream 🙂

Some questions for you for today’s What I Ate Wednesday:

  • Do you like chocolate ice cream? No! Ick.
  • Have you ever opened up a food item only to find it wasn’t what you were looking for/expecting?

WIAW: A Four-Course Vitamix Dinner

Happy Wednesday! I can’t decide if this week is flying by .. or if it’s only Wednesday.

Today’s What I Ate Wednesday eats are from last Thursday. It was a GREAT day because it’s the day I brought home my Vitamix! It was also a great day of eats, as I was wined and dined at the Vitamix store in Solon, Ohio. I pretty much had a four-course Vitamix-made dinner!

The day started pretty typical. Egg white oats with flaxseed and cinnamon and brewer’s yeast.

20170131_084619

I had a lunch meeting to go to, so I was able to have a pretty good lunch. Fish, salad, pita chips, hummus and veggies. 20170223_120946

That afternoon for a snack I had some nuts and an apple. 20170223_143419 20170223_145919

And then it was time for the glorious Vitamix evening. We started off with some frose. It was delicious – I don’t even remember all that was in it but it was dangerous. Gin, bitters, wine? Oh yea, and almond milk!20170223_183119

They had the most gorgeous assortment of cheese and veggies and dips. 20170223_191545 20170223_191855

And we also were treated to black bean quinoa sliders with an avocado dipping sauce. Not only was the sauce made in the blender, but also the burgers!20170223_183302

Dessert was fruit and a chocolate mousse. 20170223_193710

Said chocolate mousse. And strawberry “not” ice cream – it was strawberries, yogurt and vanilla! (the empty cup is behind the mousse)

20170223_193717

And that was about it. It was so good! And since I was able to go home with my very own new Vitamix Ascent Series blender,  I can’t wait to make so many of these things!!

Some questions for you for today’s What I Ate Wednesday:

  • Do you have a Vitamix? What do you make in it? I need ideas!
  • What’s something good that you’ve made recently?

WIAW: Disappointing Lunch

Today’s WIAW features some eats from last week. The day started with my usual egg whites, oats, flaxseed and brewers yeast bowl. Especially since being sick, I’m trying to have this and any foods to up my milk supply.

And a pear. Because they are so good! 20170217_090741

My midmorning snack was some nuts.

20170217_104550

For lunch, we had plans as an office to go out for Cleveland Restaurant Week, where you get 3 course meals for a special price. We had plans to go to The District. The meal started out okay – I started with a Greek salad and a pretty delicious (unpictured) roll.

20170217_124823

It went downhill from there. We waited nearly an hour, and our food hadn’t come out. We eventually had to ask for our food to be boxed up to go, because we all had to return to the office for meetings, etc. But they hadn’t made our food yet! They eventually brought our lunches out – minus the third course 😦 so no dessert for me.

When I got back to the office, I was looking forward to my chicken and hummus wrap. I ate about half of it and then nearly choked – there was A BONE IN MY WRAP. I opened up the sandwich and found several small pieces of bone inside. Blah. Lunch FAIL.

20170217_133932

After that, I was happy to meet B for a beer after work. We grabbed beers in Tremont before getting Vietnamese food for dinner.

20170217_174336

B and I ordered our go-tos when we want something semi-light and healthy. Cabbage salads and spring rolls!20170217_194525

20170217_200236

And since I didn’t have dessert for lunch (not that that would’ve stopped me), I had some chocolate, cookies and ice cream! I had some Hershey kisses, Thin Mints and mint chip Halo Top.

20170217_204344

YUM! A great end to a not-the-best food day. Questions for you for this WIAW (hosted by Sprint 2 the Table!):

  • Have you ever had a really bad lunch experience?
  • Halo Top fans-  what’s your favorite Halo Top flavor?

Atlanta Eats (And All You Can Eat Pie!!!)

Happy What I Ate Wednesday! Last week, B, FW and I were in Atlanta for a little vacation. We enjoyed some good southern food, local beer and plenty of cornbread  (yet not nearly enough  .. I think I may have a cornbread addiction). So for today’s WIAW, instead of just one day, here’s a sample of some of the great food I had on our trip.

The trip started out with a quick stop in Asheville where I had some of the best French toast ever … but I also bought this candy to keep me company in Atlanta.

20170205_143108

We of course had to have some fried green tomatoes. These had goat cheese fried with them!20170209_183427

And shrimp and grits. 20170206_182801

And plenty of biscuits and cornbread. Yummmmm cornbread!20170206_181548

One place we went to had an ALL YOU CAN EAT PIE BAR. (video below)

This was just one of our 4…or 5?…plates.20170206_185344

At the World of Coca-Cola,  I sampled 100 flavors of soda and other Coke products from around the world!20170208_142915

I also had some great Middle Eastern food one night. This was the chicken shawarma platter.20170207_193213

Another night was bar food. This BLT with avocado and mozzarella was also great.20170208_163808

We also had to try an Atlanta institution- The Varsity.  They’re known for their hot dogs. It was a cool, huge fast food place with an old school car hop feel!20170209_132329Yum. While it was a great trip with great food, my belly is ready to be back to normal eating! But my mouth is watering reliving them for today’s What I Ate Wednesday! Especially the cornbread.

Some questions for you:

  • Do you like southern food?
  • How do you like your cornbread- sweet? Savory?

WIAW: Birthday Treats!

Happy Birthday to ME! That’s right, my birthday was this week and B, FW and I had fun celebrating this weekend and enjoying some great weather, going for runs, spending time with friends, and more.

I also had some TREATS on Monday to celebrate my BIG DAY – so that’s what today’s What I Ate Wednesday is from!

The day started with going out to breakfast with B and FW! We went to Yours Truly (I know, I went there last week!) and this time I got the Eggs Bruschetta. They were so good! Two sunny side up eggs on top of spinach, tomato, parmesan and toast!

20170123_085540

Lunch was a leftover veggie burger, kale salad and a sweet potato. And La Croix 🙂

20170123_125105

Snacks during the day (in no certain order) included some energy bites! 20170123_095616

And mixed nuts …20170123_104724

Some tea and kombucha …20170123_095440

And an apple. Yup. I was snacky. 20170123_131547

And for my birthday dinner I chose sushi! It was so good – I got  veggie roll,  a rainbow roll and mackerel sashimi. And B and I shared this seaweed salad!20170123_191317

And with our dinner – some champagne. Because it was my birthday 🙂20170123_193001

Oh and some treats, of course! I made cookies and enjoyed these soft M&M cookies and some new Hershey’s Kisses. 20170123_173623 20170123_153658

And that was it! Happy birthday to ME! Some questions for you:

  • Do you like bubbly? I used to not be able to drink it but love it now!
  • What’s your go-to sushi order?
