Thinking Out Loud: Summer Edition

I have so many random things on my mind that I think it’s the PERFECT time for a Thinking Out Loud post. It’s been a crazy few weeks, but here are a few things I’ve been thinking about:

Home Renovations …

B and I (or should I say B) are knee deep in some serious updates/renovations. I hope to have more to show soon, but he just tore down a ceiling (and wallpaper) in the dining room and then put one back up. I’ve never looked at ceilings so much as I have the past week or so. And now they’re all I notice!

Shopping …

I’m feeling in a serious fashion funk and I need want some new clothes. Ever since I went to the Saks blogger brunch/fashion show, I’ve been really wanting to get some new clothing items. BUT with the aforementioned home reno, I know I should be saving money. Le sigh. Still, it’s Nordstrom’s anniversary sale and here are some items I’m admiring (from afar):

This Bootie

This sweater

And while we’re at it, these non-Nordstrom items have been calling my name:

From J Crew

From Loft

Running (or NOT Running) …

I hurt my piriformis a few weeks ago and haven’t run since. That’s right, I’m going on 2+ weeks with NO runs. This is the longest I haven’t run since giving birth a year ago and I do NOT like it. I’m going a little stir crazy! Sorry in advance to anyone I snap at …

How I feel…

Cooking …

Now that FW is one, I’m trying really hard to find some foods he will eat. He is a picky eater has a refined pallet, and it’s getting hard to find foods that he, me and B will all eat. Oh, and FW has low iron and doesn’t like meat so I’m trying to find things with iron and/or protein. Some of the newest things I’ve tried:

Spicy Chickpea Burgers (without the spice for FW) >> I liked them as did B, but FW wasn’t a fan

Spinach Banana Muffins >> We all like these!

Crockpot Spicy Peanut Chicken  (without the spice for FW) >> I liked it, B sorta liked it and FW just spit it and threw it out

Cauliflower tots >> I liked them, B didn’t try and FW may have liked them (he didn’t eat them at home but school said he did …)

So, we’re 1ish for 4 …. any tips? Food or recipe suggestions?

And that’s about all the brain randomness from me this morning. Cheers to it almost being Friday!

Some questions for you:

  • Any recipes for picky eaters? Ideally something that an adult and a one-year-old would eat? Please?
  • What’s a fashion item you want right now?
  • What’s the last home renovation/DIY thing you did?

PS – Happy birthday MOM!!! You are a great mom and wonderful grandma … ❤

WIAW: Fruit at Every Meal

I’m back to eating a ton of fruit again. I can’t help it – there’s so much good fruit in season and so much local fruit at farmers markets that I can’t help myself! And you’ll see that in today’s What I Ate Wednesday. I had fruit at every single meal.

Breakfast was a spinach banana muffin and  a few bites of cheese that I ate while putting together FW’s lunch, and then a peach when I got into the office.

My midmorning snack was a big cup of fruit salad (see – more fruit!) and some of these sourdough crackers. I LOOOOVE sourdough bread, and my coworker gave me these delicious crackers. They are so good! And Le Cracker is a local company!

Lunch was some leftovers from dinner – a homemade vegan chickpea patty, some sweet potato fries, zucchini, avocado and a handful of cherries.

And my afternoon snack to tide me over until a late afternoon/early evening meeting? You guessed it – more fruit! I had a nectarine and some cashews.

I had to present at a meeting that didn’t start until 4:30, so I knew that I’d be home late for dinner. So I decided to try out a new slow cooker recipe, Sriracha Peanut Chicken. It was pretty good – I followed the recipe for the most part but used fresh peppers and onions, homemade peanut butter, breasts instead of thighs (and only 1 lb) and a lot more sriracha.

I liked it but it isn’t one of my (or B’s) top 3 slow cooker meals so I’ll add it to the rotation but we probably won’t have it for a little while. (Confession – one thing I’ve started doing as a working mom is trying to incorporate a crockpot meal at least once a week. It makes my life so much easier!) I served it on top of some cauliflower rice. Oh, where’s the fruit you ask? I forgot to take a photo but in the top right of the photo you can see a tupperware that contained some mango. Yum!

And that was it! I was pooped after dinner and after catching up on emails from my meeting out of the office, I hopped in bed.

Some questions for you:

  • Do you have any favorite slow cooker meals?
  • Are there any fruits you don’t like?

Weekends with a 13-month-old Baby

FW is officially 13 months. No longer an infant, he’s even older than a year right now. He’s almost a toddler! How did that happen?! Anyway, before I get too mushy, here’s a little about our weekend. For having nothing planned, the weekend ended up being pretty busy and flew by.  We did some housework,  went for a long walk (since I’m still not running), and had some good food.

Saturday I babysat FW while Brian did some housework.  So naturally we started the day off with some banana pancakes.

It rained most of the morning,  so we were stuck reading and playing inside.  But as soon as it cleared up,  we went for a walk.

While FW took his afternoon nap, I did some meal prep – cauliflower tots were a success (If only FW liked them …).

The afternoon also called for a bath. I think FW rocks a mohawk pretty well 🙂

B finally got home and brought us pizza. Mama Santa’s was delicious as always.

We ended the night catching up on Game of Thrones. I can’t believe we’re finally up-to-date on all the seasons!

Sunday, the weather was gorgeous, so we spent some time outside. FW loved splashing around the fountains and splash pad!

We ended up taking a pretty long walk that afternoon. My piriformis has been bothering me, so I haven’t been running at all – but we did get in a long walk! Unfortunately, my piriformis started bothering me toward the end. But it was a pretty day!

We spent some more time working at the house (aka B worked while I watched FW). Here is a progress pic  — hopefully we’ll share some more soon!

And then we finished off the day with B’s family for dinner. We enjoyed a great meal inside after hanging out outside some more.

Questions for you:

  • Do you watch Game of Thrones?
  • Did you get in any good walks this weekend?

Taking Some Time Off Running

4 miles. 4 miles is my total for last week. I ran 4.25 miles on Sunday and that was it for the week.

Before said injury last week …

20170709_095055(0)

I’m nursing an ailment (I refuse to say injury). Well, I’m not sure what it is, but it some sort of tight or pulled muscle that might be related to my piriformis or sciatica.  I took most of last week off, but it is still pretty sore and even worse when I’m running. In fact, after Sunday’s run, I could barely walk that day  at all! So, I’m taking it easy.

wpid-2015-02-16-15-20-05

I spoke to my brother-in-law who is a doctor, and he suggested I do some stretching and take some anti-inflammatory drugs this week and see how it feels.

So, It feels funny to be linking to a running link up when I didn’t run much last week, and I’m sure this coming week won’t be any better.

Please send some healthy vibes my way!

Some questions for you:

  • When was the last time you were nursing an injury ailment?
  • How long do you take off to heal?

Spending As Much Time Outside As Possible

After a pretty muggy and rainy week in Cleveland, we finally had some sunny weather and a beautiful weekend. Which meant we got to spend some time outside and enjoy some easy summer days.

The weekend started off with some playground time. FW loves swinging! And he’s started really moving – he was crawling all over the slides and other equipment.

After the playground, we decided to stop by the Tremont Walkabout, a local art walk.

FW liked the bubbles!

And since we were in the neighborhood, we grabbed some slices at Edison’s. There was much pepperoni on the pizza!

And right across the street from Edison’s is Tremont Scoops. So naturally, I had a scoop of their Buckeye Blitz ice cream. Peanut butter ice cream with chocolate chunks and mini buckeyes. Yummmmm

Saturday morning started early- we headed over to the house to do some things. We had plans to go out for breakfast, but were running late. So instead, we decided to walk to lunch. I had a half summer salad, half BLT and it came with a side of quinoa. It was great! AND FW slept the entire time while B and I ate.

Afterwards, it was time for my Ladies Craft Beer Society! For a refresher, once a month I get together with some lady friends and we all do a craft while drinking a craft beer. This month’s craft was sugar body scrubs, and our craft beer theme was summery, citrus beers. I can’t wait to try out the body scrub!

At night, B had plans to go to see the World Cup qualifying game that was playing downtown, so I was babysitting FW. We had some fun before he went to bed.

Sunday morning, B, FW and I took a walk. My hip/butt/something is still hurting so I’m trying to take it easy, but I wanted to go for a walk to see how it felt and get outside. After the walk, we decided to hit the beach!

FW wasn’t realllllly into it.

We then hit up one of my favorites, Boaz, for a quick lunch. Give me all of the baba and quinoa and picked turnips! YUM.

That night,  we enjoyed spending time with B’s family for Sunday night dinner.  And we ended our meal with ice cream sundaes – fitting for National Ice Cream Day!

Any weekend that includes ice cream twice is great in my book!

Questions for you:

  • Did you celebrate Ice Cream Day this weekend?
  • How’s your weather been lately?

Fresh Cherry and Double Chocolate Almond Scones

Do you like fruit? I love fruit. Fresh, juicy fruit is something I crave pretty much year-round. When I was pregnant last year, I couldn’t get enough fruit. And now, FW is a fruit fiend. He’ll eat pretty much any fruit!

This time of year especially, I can’t get enough stone fruit. Nectarines. Peaches. Cherries. So, when Northwest Cherries reached out and asked if I’d like to try some of their cherries, I of course said yes.

The Northwest U.S. is actually known for seven varieties of cherries, including Bing cherries, the most popular cherry in North America, and Rainiers. You can typically spot the sweet cherries by their darker red skins – in general, the darker, the sweeter.

So, while I’ve been enjoying eating cherries by the handful (and spitting out the seeds … so ladylike), I’ve also been enjoying testing out different recipes using my delicious bounty. In addition to making these cherry pie bars, I have also been dabbling in the scone game (or should I say Game of Scones? #nerdhumor).

These scones are a great way to use some fresh cherries, but also just great in general. The combination of cherry and almond is great, and the dark and white chocolate picks up on the cherries’ sweetness.

The only part about this recipe I don’t like? Chopping and seeding the cherries. But, if you can get past that, then I highly recommend you make these.

Luckily, B decided that he doesn’t mind chopping and seeding cherries, so I see more cherry recipes in my future. If you don’t have yourself a B to chop the cherries, I suggest you wear clothes you don’t care about and be prepared to have deep red cherry hands for a little while!

Fresh Cherry and Double Chocolate Almond Scones

Makes about 12 scones

Here’s what you need:

  • 3 1/4 cups flour
  • 2 Tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 2 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 3/4 cups cold butter, sliced into pieces
  • 1 cup unsweetened coconut milk
  • 1 teaspoon almond extract
  • 1 cup of your favorite chocolate chopped up or chips – I used 1/2 cup semisweet and 1/2 cup of white chocolate chunks
  • 1 1/2 cups fresh cherries, pitted and chopped

Here’s what you do:

  1. Preheat oven to 425 degrees.
  2. In a large bowl, combine flour, sugar, salt, baking soda and powder. Using your fingers or a fork, cut in butter until the batter resembles coarse crumbs.
  3. Add in coconut milk and almond extract. Combine until batter is wet and sticky.
  4. Fold in cherries and chocolate. Combine with a spatula or spoon until dough is evenly mixed.
  5. Divide dough in half and pat down into two even circles about 1 inch high.  Cut into 6 triangles.
  6. Bake on an oven sheet lined with foil or parchment paper for 12-14 minutes. Enjoy!

Some questions for you:

  • What’s your favorite fruit?
  • Do you like fruit desserts?

Disclosure: Northwest Cherries provided me some cherries to sample. All reviews and opinions are my own.

WIAW: Whole Lotta Cherries

YAY for Wednesday! We’re halfway to Friday. That means it’s a good day to share my eats and see what you are all up to and eating as well. I’m BACK finally for What I Ate Wednesday!

The day started with some sweet cherries. Northwest Cherry Growers sent me a lot of cherries to try out last week, and it was great to have some for breakfast (and then again two more times that day …. stay tuned!).

I paired them with a handful of nuts. This photo was taken after I had already eaten a few.

Lunch was some leftovers from my freezer – and they tasted great! A quinoa, black bean, sweet potato, chicken chorizo, pepper salad.

Paired with some more fruit – a nectarine.

In the afternoon, I had some Werthers (not pictured), along with some grapes.

For dinner, B cooked. We had bought some local sausages at Ohio City Provisions, along with local sauerkraut. Of course, I paired it with more cherries (and grapes). And some bread.

And for dessert? I baked some cherry pie bars on Sunday and we had a few leftover, so B and I enjoyed some.

And that was it! Yes, I had cherries 3 times in one day. And they were delicious each time 🙂

Some questions for you:

  • Are you loving cherry season like I am?
  • Yikes, just realized how few veggies I had. How much veggies do you eat?

Tuesdays on the Run: Fourth of July Week

Is anyone else still wishing it were last Tuesday and we had the day off from work and could be just spending time outside enjoying the Fourth of July? I definitely am! Last week I had off Monday and Tuesday off, and we enjoyed spending time outside with a hike on Monday and a run as a family on Tuesday.  The week included 5 runs, including 2 outdoor runs and one with a stroller:

My favorite run of the week was on Tuesday – B, FW and I got out to the park and got in a stroller run. I pushed FW for about 3 miles and B took him for the last mile or so:

It wasn’t a bad week, but my mileage was much lower than it has been. My legs just felt heavy and tired most of the week – it probably didn’t help that a few nights in a row I got barely 5 hours of sleep. And then yesterday, I pulled a muscle or something in my lower back/butt. TMI? I’m not sure what’s up, but I can barely walk straight, so this week may not include much running sadly 😦

Some questions for you:

  • How many hours of sleep do you get in a typical night?
  • What are you looking forward to most this week?

Scenes from a July Weekend in Cleveland

Wow, the weekend flew by. Guess when your last weekend was 5 days, 2 days seems too fast!

This weekend included some walks,  runs and working on our new house!!! (More to come on that)

Some of the highlights:

Finding these old newspapers. When your house is built in the 1920s, I guess you’ll find some cool things,  including newspapers from the 1950s.

Going for walks with this dude.  I am loving our BOB stroller,  it takes bumpy sidewalks so well!!

There were also sweet cherries this weekend. Northwest Cherry Growers sent me a lot of cherries to try out, and I mean LOTS of cherries. Which meant removing lots of pits and stems. Thankfully B didn’t mind 😁

Walks with Grandma. FW still isn’t walking on his own,  but he’s close.

Pizza. Yes we have pizza pretty much every weekend.

Runs and hugs with this guy. This photo was taken before I threw my back out, so I don’t know how much running I will be doing this week.

More cherries. So of course my weekend included some baking. These cherry pie bars didn’t come out looking that great, but they were a great dessert for Sunday dinner with B’s family.

And I still have more cherries left! Any suggestions on what else to bake?

Questions for you:

  • Have you ever thrown out your back? How long did it take to heal?
  •  What should we do with all these cherries?
