Rest + Vacation!

Rest + Vacation!

Hello from Florida!

B and I are celebrating our 15-year anniversary with a long weekend in Fort Lauderdale (we return today), and it was so nice to get in some time alone! I’m so grateful for my parents who came into town to watch the kids and shuttle them to activities while we had time to ourselves. Anyway, I did get in some workouts before and during our trip, but there were more rest days/non-running days than usual.

Here’s what the week looked like:

Sunday: 8.03 miles running, some chest and tricep workout, hip PT

I was feeling kinda sluggish, but still wanted to get in a long-ish run. I set an alarm to run before our day, which included day #2 of the soccer tournament, some grocery shopping and then dinner with cousins/B’s family. We only had a little bit of time to actually be at home, so I was glad to have gotten in my run and PT before our day.

On the 8 miles, I saw THREE different turtles! One was in the middle of a road, which I felt bad about – I wasn’t sure if I should attempt to pick him up and move him, but I ultimately decided not to. Hopefully it made it to its destination safely!

Monday: 4 mile walk/run in the morning, hip PT, shoulder and leg workout, 1.8 mile walk in the morning and 2 mile lunch walk

I felt like walking, but when I went out I decided to go for a run instead. I made it about 2 miles and then I did something I haven’t done in a while – I fell! UGh, I hate when I fall when running. Luckily, I wasn’t bloody somehow, but my left knee was hurting pretty badly after the fall, so I walked/ran/hobbled the rest of the way home. Hopefully it’s feeling better soon? But I definitely noticed it on my walks later in the day.

That night was my book club! Have you read this book?

Tuesday: 3.1 miles mostly walking, back and bicep workout, hip PT

My knee was still hurting from my fall yesterday, and I found it painful to pick up my leg too far. Ugh! A good day for a rest day then? Yes! I got in a walk (that was fine), my back and bicep workout and hip/hamstring PT. I had a semi-longish day in the office, so besides a few laps to other buildings for different meetings, I didn’t get in much walking. That night we had to be in three places at once – GM had swimming at 6, FW had baseball game at 6, LM had a softball game at 6:30. We somehow made it work (thanks to help, rides, and meeting one another later), but I had a sneak peek at what’s in store for my future.

Wednesday: 3.1 miles walking with a little running, some core and hip/hamstring PT, 2.34 mile lunchtime walk

I was slated to have a leg day workout, but my knee was still bothering me from my fall, as well as the back of my knee. I didn’t want to mess with it, so I focused on doing my hip PT (paying attention to not hurt my knee) and just going for a walk with a little jogging (testing the knee) as part of it. I also got in a 2.34 mile walk at lunch!

Thursday: 4.28 mile jog outside, chest and tricep and short core workout, hip PT

My knee was still hunting, not as bad and I was able to bend it almost fully (yay!), so I tried to run. It was already 80 degrees when I headed out, but I was able to run without much issue! I still took it easy and ran slower than usual, with a little walking, but was glad to get in a few miles before B and I headed to the airport for our trip. It was leg day, but squats still made my knee feel off, so I opted to do a tricep and chest workout instead.

After landing in Fort Lauderdale, our room wasn’t ready, so B and I dropped off our luggage and got in a few miles of walking around our hotel and the beach. It was a gorgeous day – it was steamy but the breeze kept us cool. And we were so happy to be on vacation!

Friday: 4.13 mile run, hip PT

VACATION! I woke up late (okay, I slept in until 7) and found temps already very steamy in the 80s. I was excited to test out my knee and get in a vacation run! I ran on the path along the beach and although it was hot, I enjoyed the view. I got in 4 miles running with some walking in there, and the knee felt ok! I also got in some hip PT.

Morning run views

The day itself was very relaxing, with most of the day spent snoozing and reading on the beach. A truly rare occurrence! We also walked to downtown for dinner – the original plan was that we would walk there and uber back, but we ended up walking both ways, which was almost 6 miles. I didn’t mind getting in so many steps after my relaxing day – it was enjoyable, and had cooled down somewhat as the sun sat.

Saturday: 4 mile run, hip PT, 4.5 mile walk

I slept in later than usual and when I went out for the run, it was already super steamy (feels like in 100s). I was able to get in 4 miles, but much slower than the day before, and with some walking. Still, I was proud to have slogged through it.

Later that morning, B and I picked up some coffees (matcha for me!) and did a nature walk. There is a state park near our hotel with some cool trees and we were able to walk through the area, as well as do a little shopping after. All in all, it was 4.5 additional miles before we were back at the hotel.

Not running-related, but at night we walked to dinner to celebrate our anniversary- it was the perfect end to our trip.

Total: 24.61 miles running, plus walking, hip PT

Some questions for you:

  • What’s the hottest weather you will run in?
  • Do you have any plane travel coming up?

Happy anniversary! Looks like a wonderful trip. I hope your knee is feeling better, too!

Happy Anniversary. It’s great that you got to get away for a few days.

I hope your knee is better now.

I’m pretty miserable running in the upper 70s. Florida running is a whole different beast!

Yeah, I consider running in 70° tank top weather and hot. Running here was definitely a different experience, but I still preferred it to running in ice! I felt like my body acclimated pretty fast, by this morning, which was day three, it didn’t feel as bad. But still hot!

Glad the weather cooperated this time! Was that Birch State Park? Fun fact- that’s where my husband and I got married!

I’m very glad your knee is okay. It’s so annoying to have a random incident like that derail your running. But- you’re obviously a resilient person. Hope the hip and knee feel good this week. And- Happy Anniversary!

Oh how nice for you to celebrate your anniversary kid-free! I’m glad the weather was good for you but what a bummer about your fall! I’m glad your knee is improving. Nice photos from the trails!

ugh what a bummer about the fall! and it just really tweaks everything, doesn’t it? glad it wasn’t too bad in the end. Happy anniversary and glad you guys got a chance to do something nice with just the two of you.

I will run in the heat if I have to, but if I’m just running for fun then prefer it to be under 23 celsius. I once ran a half marathon in Chicago in July and to be honest with you don’t even know how I survived that. it was like 33 that day with a billion percent humidity.

We are flying to London on the 31st of July for a quick weekend trip and then will fly out again on the 4th of August to Glasgow. My husband made a ‘joke’ about going to see Harry Styles next weekend in London and I damn near booked flights as he was looking at ticket prices. Then he had the audacity to say “just kidding’. what a jerk. LOL.

Sounds like some fun travels await you!! Is it too late to add in a stop for Harry Styles? 😉

it’s not too late 🙂 it’s just not super realistic haha!

I know that sea wall! How fun!

Yeah, it was super hot and humid here (probably worse down by you than by me, but still). This is about my threshold for heat. I try to be up and out before the sun comes up so even if it’s hot, at least I’m not frying in the sun, too.

I hope your knee feels better and that you had a wonderful get away!

Happy Anniversary! I’m actually heading to Houston tomorrow for most of the week (short vacay with my sister). I have never run in the state of Texas, so I’m looking forward to a few real hot (and probably steamy, LOL) runs!

Happy belated anniversary! How wonderful that you were able to get away for few days without the kids.

I’m so sorry to hear that you fell while running and hope your knee continues to feel better as the days go by.

Happy anniversary! Glad your fall wasn’t too bad – that could have been much worse! It’s always get to recharge for just a little bit away from the kids, and I’m sure your parents were very excited to have them as guests! They are probably wondering how you do it all, every day 🙂
