Hi friends! Grab a coffee and let’s catch up for another monthly coffee date! I’m actually sipping some chai right now – it’s fitting for the fall, isn’t it?
Somehow we’re already kicking off October, and summer suddenly feels like it was years ago. September was full of school, soccer, books, a little travel, and plenty of time in the car driving to and from practices, etc.
So, if we were having coffee today, I’d tell you that…
I’d tell you that we are fully back in the swing of the school year. For the first time, all three kids are at the same school, and I have to say, it is pretty nice! We’re back into our routines of early mornings, homework, practices, lessons, packing lunches, remembering (or forgetting) Chromebooks and trumpets, and everything else that comes with the school year. It feels good to have a routine again, but I’m also tired!

I’d tell you that apparently I decided October needed a little more excitement, because I signed up for a 10K this Sunday…on Tuesday. Yes, I run all the time, but I honestly cannot remember the last time I actually raced a 10K. It may have been before kids, which means 10 years ago?! Of course, now that I’ve signed up, my hip has decided to start acting up a little, so I’m slightly nervous. I’m reminding myself that I don’t need to race it. I can just go out, enjoy running somewhere different, and see how I feel. We’ll see if I actually listen to myself!
Speaking of my hip, I also hit a pretty exciting milestone this week: 150 days of doing my hip PT! When I was diagnosed with a torn labrum back in April, I committed to doing the exercises nearly every day, and I’m honestly pretty proud that I’ve stuck with it. I definitely feel stronger, even though there are still days when I notice my hip more than others. The fact that I’m still running, feeling good overall and even impulsively signing up for races feels like a win. We’ll see how I feel on Sunday!

I’d tell you that we’re starting to wrap up fall sports just in time to … sign up for winter sports, of course. LM has her last soccer game this weekend, while FW had 2 games and his soccer playoffs start in a few weeks. And because apparently I enjoy living out of my car, I just registered everyone for our next round of activities: basketball, indoor soccer, and yes, we’re still doing piano and ballet. Here we go again!

I’d tell you that September was a great reading month. I’ve also been listening to a lot more audiobooks lately. My commute is about 45 minutes each way, so when I’m not calling my mom, audiobooks make that time feel much more enjoyable. This month’s books included Whistler by Ann Patchett, Dolly All the Time by Annabel Monaghan, To Cage a Wild Bird by Brooke Fast, Kin by Tayari Jones, and Mad Mabel by Sally Hepworth.

But the big reading surprise for me has been The Unselected Journals of Emma M. Lion. I wasn’t completely sold during the first book because it felt a little slow, but I kept going, and then I absolutely devoured the series. I’m almost finished with book eight! I love finding a series that makes you immediately want to pick up the next book, although it also means everything else on my reading list gets pushed aside.
I’d tell you that we kicked off September with a Labor Day weekend trip to Cincinnati. The plan was to watch Boston College play Cincinnati and also catch an FC Cincinnati game while we were there. Unfortunately, the weather had other plans. After several lightning delays, the FC Cincinnati game was canceled, and Boston College lost, so our sports luck wasn’t exactly great! But we still had such a fun time. We got to see one of B’s friends and his family, and, most importantly according to the kids, spend plenty of time in the hotel pool.

I’d tell you that B and I even managed to squeeze in a date night this month! We went to see Lang Lang perform where the Cleveland Orchestra plays, which was such a fun change of pace. We also went out to celebrate B’s birthday and had an amazing cheeseboard at L’Albatros. I love a good cheeseboard, and theirs is really the best.

I’d tell you that we also had our annual block party, which is always one of those simple neighborhood events the kids look forward to. There are tons of games, although I realize that apparently most of them revolve around food! The kids searched for Cheerios buried in whipped cream without using their hands, tried to eat donuts dangling from strings without their hands, competed in an egg toss, attempted an Oreo challenge, and more. It was messy, hilarious and so much fun.

I’d tell you that fall is definitely starting to creep in. It was in the 80s just yesterday, but we’re supposed to have a sunny, cooler weekend, and the days are noticeably shorter. I’m already missing those long summer evenings and bright morning runs! As much as I love Halloween, pumpkins, spooky season, and everything that comes with October, I would happily take a few more weeks of summer. But since I apparently don’t get a vote, bring on October! We’ve got soccer playoffs, Halloween fun, winter sports on the horizon, probably a lot more time in the car, and hopefully plenty of good books ahead.
That’s what’s going on in my world. What’s new with you?
- Are you excited for fall, or are you still missing summer like me?
- What was the best book you read in September (or lately)? I’m always looking for something to add to my list!
- Have you ever signed up for a race at the very last minute? And if you’re a runner, what’s your favorite distance to race?
