Running the Miles with Nothing to Train For

Another week of running, but nothing to train for.

And that’s okay with me. I’m kind of liking running whenever I want, however much I want and not having to worry about getting in a certain number of miles during the week.

Not training doesn’t mean I’m not running – here’s a look at last week:

Some highlights:

Sunday morning I got in my runs around family activities. We decided to go out to brunch, so I jogged the 1 mile there. Then, after brunch I took a long route home and got in an extra 3ish miles. No running photos, but instead a pic of our brunch 🙂

Tuesday, I wore my new Skirt Sports capris and got in 5 miles before work. These capris have SO many pockets – they’re the best.

My runs have been pretty slow lately, but I also haven’t been sleeping enough or taking many days off. I wonder if I got more sleep or took a few rest days if I’d notice an improvement? I did finally take Saturday off (as you can see) after more than a week of no off days so hopefully that will pay off.

Questions for you:

  • Do you notice a connection between how much rest you get and the quality of your runs?
  • What are you training for?

I’m linking up with Deborah and Kim for the Weekly Run Down.

  1. As you know, running is so personal for all of us. I simply cannot do high mileage…the one training cycle I tried it for a marathon, I toed the start line dramatically over-trained. It was a great learning experience, but my body took a beating in the process LOL That said, I have figured out that I can do a short run (2-3 miles max) the day before a race and still do alright with my race performance (barring any weird race day conditions). Your consistency is awesome! I love the idea of running to brunch and taking a longer route home 😉

  2. I think my first comment went “poof,” so here goes again 😉 Running (and training) is so personal. Myself, I just cannot do high mileage. The one training cycle I tried it, had me toeing the start line of my marathon dramatically over-trained. It was a great learning experience, but my body took a beating LOL I have figured out, though I can do a short run (2-3 miles max) the day before a race and not have it affect my race performance (barring any weird weather conditions, etc.). I love your idea of running to brunch then taking a longer route back home 😉

  3. I love incorporating running with real life activities like you did with your run to and from brunch! I have found the more I sleep the better my runs are! Actually, the better everything else is. But sadly it’s not always easy to get enough sleep!

  4. Sometimes it’s nice to just run for fun – it always make running more enjoyable. I love those times when I’m not training because it means I can run when I feel like it. It helps me fall in love with running again.

  5. I’m looking forward to the runs where i have nothing to train for again! I’m training for the chicago marathon at the moment. After that I hope to just run for fun and get in more cross training like I did last winter (and up to my surgery last March).

There’s definitely a connection between a better run with better sleep! At least for me!

  6. Yes I definitely notice a difference in my workouts and the amount of sleep I get. Also the way I eat impacts my workouts. summer schedules are challenging! Nice job this week and thanks for linking up
