Started out with a half

Started out with a half

What a week! I can’t believe that just a week ago was the Cleveland Half Marathon. It was a HOT day, but I still finished the half at 2:07ish, which I was proud of.

After my hip injury, I wanted to make sure I spent some time recovering this week – that meant some walks, some hip PT, a little jogging (nothing crazy!) and core work.

Here’s what the week looked like:

Sunday: Cleveland half marathon! (13.25 miles on my Garmin)

I ran a half marathon! The full recap can be found here, but here’s the one sentence summary: I started out with some hip/groin pain after running the 5K on Saturday, so I started out slow but I think this helped me because it was HOT and I was able to finish faster than I thought!

Sunday was a busy day. After my half marathon, I was able to make it to my son’s soccer game (they won!), then my daughter’s ballet recital, and then my niece’s graduation. I didn’t do a lot of sitting around/relaxing, but I think that helped me not feel so sore during the day! I was pooped at night though!

Monday: 3.1 mile walk (with a few jog intervals) outside, hip PT, core workout, 1 mile lunch walk outside

I was tired Sunday! But my daughter wasn’t feeling well, so I didn’t get in as much sleep as I would’ve liked overnight. She luckily felt good in the morning, but I was tired Monday morning and decided to sleep in a little bit. This meant a shorter-than-usual workout, but I did also get in a short lunch walk. It was beautiful out!

Tuesday: 4 miles walking outdoors, weighted core, hip PT, 2.24 mile stroller walk, 1.38 mile lunch walk

I woke up to 70 degrees and it was glorious! After doing some core work, it was starting to get light out, so I got in a sunrise walk. When GM woke up, he wanted to take a walk too, so we walked to buy some bread, bagels and of course a little breakfast treat. I was also lucky enough to get in a short lunch walk! It was supposed to rain all afternoon but it stayed clear (and hot!) so I enjoyed going for a little walk.

Wednesday: 4.18 mile run/walk, hip PT, weighted core, 2.62 mile walk outside

I woke up to much cooler temps than it had been – 55 degrees! I still got outside for a walk/run but it was due to start raining, so I headed inside for the last 2 miles of my 4ish mile walk. It was drizzling most of the afternoon, but I still got in a walk outside at lunch. I was supposed to have a lunch meeting, but it got cancelled so I lucked out and was able to get outside!

Thursday: 4 mile treadmill run (with some walking), 1.25 treadmill mile walk while working, core workout, hip PT

Since my legs were feeling pretty good, I decided to get in a short run after doing some core work. I hopped on the treadmill and got in 2 miles, did some walk/running, then finished with the last mile.

Friday: 5.03 mile run/walk, short core workout, hip PT, 1.5 mile treadmil walk while working and 3 mile outdoor walk at lunch

I woke up to 40s, and since my legs were feeling good, I decided to get in a little run walk, and was pleased to make it to 5 miles! It warmed up to the 60s and also got in a lunchtime walk, making for a great day with lots of time outdoors– so good for the soul!

Saturday: 5.19 rainy miles

I woke up to rain rainy rain! But I was dying to get in a run outside, and I got out for what I thought what would be a little break in the rain …. it was a break for about 2 miles and then a downpour! I made it home SOAKING wet but happy to have run pain free!

The rest of the day included some sports and fun to pre-celebrate my daughter’s birthday- a girls manicure, my son’s soccer tournament, and out to dinner for Italian – my daughter’s choice!

Total: 28ish miles running, walking, hip PT

Some questions for you:

  • What is the weather look like this holiday weekend for you? We’re anticipating rain Sunday again – keep your fingers crossed it stays clear for my daughter’s bday celebration!
  • How long do you take off after a half marathon?

Sounds like you had a great week, ending with a PAIN FREE run on Saturday, woohoo!!! As usual, you are so busy. Happy Birthday to your daughter- I had to laugh a little that her dinner request was Italian, and then it looks like she’s eating a bowl of plain pasta. My daughter was like that when she was younger too!

Fingers crossed for nice weather for you guys today.

We are having a dreary weekend but we got a bit a break from the rain this morning.

Happy birthday to your daughter — love the manicure!

Glad your hip isn’t bothering you too much.

Congrats on your half! Sounds like it worked out well!

Love the manicures–and you cut your hair! It’s so cute.

I always would take a week off after a half marathon to recover. I did other things, of course!

Our Ohio weather was a bit crazy this week! I was quite surprised to come home to such humid and warm weather. We enjoyed the drive home from Cleveland airport better than our usual drive from Detroit airport. We will probably fly out of there more often!

Congrats on a solid race – especially considering your hip recovery AND that hot weather! That’s great to hear you are back running pain free already too. Woohoo!

Congratulations on your half! That’s amazing!

And happy birthday to your daughter! I hope the weather held for her party!

The weather here has been garbage. Hot, humid, buggy, and stormy. I’m over it.

I’m really glad your half went so well! I also think being so active post-race was beneficial to your recovery. Movement is magic!
