Getting back out there

This week I was still trying out my hip. Trying to get in some runs, run/walks, and just keeping my movement going. We had some BEAUTIFUL weather and the colors were starting to really show off, so I did get in some pretty photos!

Am I fully recovered from my 10K? No, but I did some run/walks and just runs this week to test it out and I’m getting there!

Here’s how the week looked:

Sunday: 6.1 mile walk, hip PT, shoulder and leg workout

Happy Sunday! I normally love a long run on Sunday, but was dedicated to taking it easy after my hip was bothering me most of the previous week. I got in a walk – 2 miles outside and then 4 on the treadmill when GM got up, and some weights, with my hip PT as well.

Monday: 4.15 miles run/walk, hip PT, back and bicep workout, 3.68 mile walking

With my hip bothering me but starting to feel better, I decided to take it easy and see if I could get in a little run/walk. It was 65 degrees at 5 a.m., so I was eager to get outside and see how I felt. I kept it slow, and it felt alright – just a little pain. I was also able to get in my hip PT, a back and bicep workout, and 4.37 miles of walking. It was truly a beautiful day! And all of a sudden it feels – fall colors are popping!

Tuesday: 4.5 mile run/walk, hip PT, leg workout, 3.17 mile walking

I woke u to 65 degrees AGAIN and knew I had to get outside. My hip was feeling okay even after the previous day’s running/walking, so I decided to take it easy again and do a slow run/walk. I know it sounds silly, but for some reason the hip hurts MORE the faster I run – I assume it’s because my body is using more/different muscles? So a slow run with walking (about 12 min/miles) was perfect. I also did a leg workout, a few core exercises and hip PT. That afternoon it was 80 degrees! So of course I had to get in some walking.

Wednesday: 3.1 miles run outside, hip PT, plus 3.1 miles walking outside, plus 1.6 mi treadmill walking

Double outdoor 5K! I did a 5K run and a 5K walk, even though it was rainy. I’ve gotten better about getting outside in the rain, especially when it is just a drizzle.

Thursday:  5.22 miles running, hip PT, 3.2 miles walking

I felt pretty good after Wednesday’s run, so I decided to get in another, longer run – and it felt pretty good most of the time! I also was able to get in some walking before starting a busy day. No lunch or mid-day movement, just work, kids had an early dismissal, and then family flu shots! Then, at night was a Mom’s Night Out for my kids’ school.

Even though it wasn’t a lot of walking during the day, WOW it was a pretty day out!

Friday: 4.5 miles run/walk, short chest workout, hip PT, 3.1 mile rainy walk

I woke up TIRED, my hip a little cranky, my arm sore (thanks, flu shots) and just didn’t feel it. I got outside and did a run/walk, and that was that – then it started raining! I was also able to squeeze in a rainy walk at lunch – it was drizzling, but I’m getting better about getting outside in the rain.

Saturday: 5.38 mi walk, hip PT

We had another early Saturday, so I set my alarm to get in some walking/running and hip PT before our day. I ended up with almost 6 miles before it was time to get everyone up, fed and out the door. We had 2 soccer games – my daughter’s last one and FW’s semi-finals for playoffs. My son’s game was crazy – whoever won would be going onto the finals on Sunday. They were down 2-1 up until the last 3 seconds, when the goalie scored a goal! So it then went into overtime, and nobody scored. So then it went into penalty kicks and they ended up coming back and winning! They play again tomorrow.

Total: 27.26 miles running, walking, hip PT and weight training

Some questions for you:

  • How do you feel about rainy walks or runs? I’m generally ok with it as long as it’s in the 50s or above. 40s and rainy is just too cool for me!
  • Did it get cool for you this weekend?

using run walk intervals is definitely easier on your hips. I did that many times after recovering from hip and glute issues. It is not surprising that your hip bothers you the faster and more your run.

It makes sense to me that running faster would aggravate your hip more — it probably engages more muscles and calls on different form, etc. I’m glad you’re able to work through it though.

I won’t head out for a run in the rain but don’t mind getting caught if it’s not a downpour.

Your fall colors have really popped! We’re probably two weeks behind you with leaf color.

Congrats to your son’s soccer team on winning their game in penalty kicks! Hope they do well today!

Your photos are BEAUTIFUL!!! Thanks for posting them- we Floridians have to live vicariously through you guys this time of year.

So, if running faster aggravates your hip, it makes sense that the race stressed it out a little. I know that whenever you have a niggle or slight injury, the advice is always to avoid speedwork. Anyway- it sounds like you know what you’re doing, and the rest and PT should take care of it.

Since it never gets that cold here, I don’t mind running in the rain, as long as there’s no lightning, obviously.

Oh wow, your photos of the lake and the autumn colours – SO BEAUTIFUL!!!! There are definitely other muscles involved in faster running, I also have some light twinge around a hip since I did some faster intervals some week ago, so I need to keep it slower until my body is more used to running, also probably need to work more on hip mobility.

We had some way colder weather this weekend than we’ve had since like 4-5 months. It’s the time for it so it’s ok, I guess! But it’s been beautiful. I don’t mind walking or running in rain, but it’s a bummer if I also want to take photos!

Beautiful pics! Our leaves are just starting to turn. Hoping the rain stays away for awhile, so we can enjoy the beauty. I’m not a fan of rainy runs (or walks), but they’re bearable if the temps are warm

You know me, I’ll go out in the rain! Still better than the TM. Your photos are lovely–this is my favorite time of year! Congrats to your son’s team–I hope they won their game yesterday.

Oh, my goodness! How gorgeous are those scenery photos! I wish I had that to walk or run in every day!

I kind of hate the rain. I don’t mind swimming, but getting wet in regular clothes is not my favorite.

What an exciting game for your kiddo! I hope they won it all!
