This week was all about recovering from my race. I raced a 10K on Sunday and felt a twinge in my hip afterwards and it stayed on throughout the week. So I used my judgment and decided to take it easy, focusing on physical therapy and walking the rest of this week. I did not get in my usual mileage, but here’s what it looked like:
Sunday: 10K race, hip PT, 1 mile walking
Sunday was my first race since the Cleveland Challenge Series last May, and my first 10K that I can remember since possibly before kids. I was a little nervous when I decided to run it the Tuesday before, but also excited to see how I did.
It was a family affair – the rest of the family did the 1 mile fun run, and the kids all did so great! And then it was time for me to run. It was a 2 lap course, which wasn’t as bad as I envisioned, especially since my sister-in-law and her family lived about 1.5 miles in the course so I saw them twice! I ended up starting a little too fast, but felt okay for most of the run. I’m pleased with my time – it was faster than I typically run and I had fun!

That night, my daughter asked if we could walk to my sister and brother-in-law’s for our Sunday dinner, and since they only live about a mile away and it was gorgeous out, we did just that. It was nice to get in a walk before dinner and felt good!
Monday: 3.15 miles run/walk, hip PT, back and bicep workout, 3.68 mile walking
After Sunday’s race, my hip was sore, my legs were a little tired and I wasn’t planning on getting in more than a few miles. I did an easy run/walk for about a 5K, some weights, and some easy walking. Oh yes – and course, hip PT!
Tuesday: 3.55 mile run/walk, hip PT, leg workout
I had a BUSY day Tuesday and found myself tired/snoozing too much – so much that I only had time to get in a short run/walk, along with PT and my leg workout. I didn’t have any time during the day to walk OR run any more! I barely made my 11,000 step goal – yikes! My hip was still bothering me a little, but I assumed it was due to sitting a lot during the day, as well as in the car for a while during my commute.
Wednesday: 3.11 miles run, hip PT, plus 2 miles walking
Wow – I slept through my alarm this day! I can’t remember the last time I did that. It unfortunately meant that when I woke up at 6:10 (!!) I had about 30 minutes to get in a run. I went out, got in a fast (for me) run and then started the day. I did hip PT later (not first, as I usually do) and some walking. I noticed my hip was not feeling better, even a little worse after the mornings run, and realized I would have to keep an eye on at the rest of the week.
Thursday: 4.75 miles walking, hip PT, mini chest weight workout
I decided to take it easy for real with my hip bothering me after my fast 5K on Wednesday, and just did some walking. I also had to have some bloodwork drawn that afternoon and knew I wouldn’t be able to eat much before hand, so wanted to keep my activity to a minimum – which is hard for me!
Friday: 9.35 miles walking, hip PT
What a beautiful day! As much as I wanted to run, I knew I should take it easy so I decided to go for a few walks during the day. The morning started out cold and crisp, but by the afternoon it was in the 70s and truly a beautiful fall day.

Saturday: 5.38 mi walk, hip PT
I didn’t have the best night of sleep Friday night, but Saturday morning I woke up still before everyone to sunshine and 50 degrees, so I decided to go out for a solo walk. I was bummed because we were originally going to do another family 5K – one of FW’s friends’ dads organizes a local 5K and it was this day – but I knew I should take it easy, so we didn’t end up going, and instead, I took a walk. It was nice getting out for a solo walk as the sun was coming up, but still not the same as a run at all!
The day included a soccer game for my oldest, out for ice cream after that, a playdate for my daughter, some muffin baking and baseball watching. Go Guardians!
Total: 16.37 miles running, walking, hip PT and weight training
Some questions for you:
- Do you take time off after a race? I don’t usually, but this week I had to, to my chagrin.
- Are you watching playoff baseball?
