Summertime Routine

Summertime Routine

Woohoo! After a few weeks on and off of travel, days off, holidays, etc. we were back this week for a FULL week of work, workouts and routine.

As much as I LOVE vacation and time off, I realize I do like routines. Especially summertime routine where I can still sleep in, and still get in a workout. Back-to-school routine where I wake up at 4 something? Meh …. but getting up an hour later? OK, I will take it.

This week also included some time off running – on Thursday (after my workout), I had to get stitches, and while they heal there’s no running (3 days!) and NO weight lifting (for 3 weeks!). Luckily I got some runs and weight lifting in before, but man, I’m going to miss the lifting the next few weeks.

Sunday: 7.25 miles running, hip PT, shoulders, chest and tricep workout

After a few days of sleeping in and rushing workouts since everyone was awake, I was looking forward to getting up early and getting in a longer outdoor run Sunday. But life had other plans. FW woke up sick in the middle of the night at 2:30 a.m., and I didn’t go back to sleep until 4ish. Then for some reason my alarm went off at 5 a.m., and then instead of turning it off, in my half-asleep state, I hit snooze so I continued to wake up every 15 minutes discombobulated. When I finally realized what was going on, I fell back to sleep … only to be woken up by my 7 a.m. alarm I had set to workout. I got out of bed and started to get ready to workout, but then GM woke up and wouldn’t go back to sleep. Needless to say, my plans for a long outdoor solo run were not happening. I was able to get GM breakfast, and then brought him into the basement with me to watch some PBC kids while I ran a little on the treadmill and did some weights. I was so grateful to still get in a solid workout, even if it wasn’t what I had planned.

Monday: 3.25 mile walk/run (1.25 mile run, 2 mile walk/run), back and bicep weights, hip PT, started leg workout, 1.25 mile walk at lunch

Monday was a pretty uneventful day – and that’s okay! I decided to take it semi-easy and do mostly walking. Remember, I’m trying to not run a million miles in July like I did last year and then injure myself again. I also got in a nice weight workout and hip PT before spending the day in the office. I did get in a short walk at the office during lunchtime and lots of walking back and forth between locations kept my step count at least above my goal of 11,000.

Tuesday: 4.17 mile walk/run in the morning, hip PT, core and leg workout

WOW I was tired this morning! I had a really hard time getting up, and then when I got out the door, my body did NOT want to move! I told myself to run 1 mile and then I could walk. I managed to walk/run the 4ish miles before it was time to get to the office. I did get in a 1 mile walk at night before an epic little league game – my son’s team was in the playoffs. He was the starting pitcher, and they went into extra innings! They ended up losing by one, but it was a really exciting last game.

Wednesday: 6.25 miles outdoor run, core workout, hip PT, 2.82 miles walking, 1100 yards swimming

Isn’t it funny how one day your body feels one way and another day your body feels differently? Wednesday felt pretty good! I was able to get in a 10K and felt pretty good almost the entire time. And I saw some herons while I was out.

And since I was working from home, I got to get in a nice walk during my lunch break. That night, I also got in a swim! It had been a while since I swam and it felt good. Which is good (and bad) because as of the next day – I learned I can’t swim for 2 weeks.

Thursday: 6.2 mile run, hip PT, weighted core workout

I got in an easy run, some weighted core exercises and my hip PT. That afternoon, I had to go to the dr to get a mole removed – and they decided to do a punch incision, which was so deep, I ended up needing stitches! The healing timeframe/recovery is 3 days without running/getting my heartrate up, 2-3 weeks without swimming, and 3 weeks without lifting! It will be an interesting few days/weeks.

Friday: 4.73 mile solo walk, 1.93 mile family walk

Since I wasn’t allowed to run, I was looking forward to taking a solo walk at the same time. It looked like it was going to rain, so I decided to stay close to home while walking. I got in almost 5 miles before it was time to get ready for work. I also got in an almost 2 mile walk with the family – since everyone was home and up early, we walked to a bakery and coffee shop in our ‘hood, got some treats and fresh challah, and then ate on our front porch. A perfect start our Friday! Later that afternoon I got in another walk – 2.45 miles by myself! And I saw another heron.

Saturday: 5.9 mile walk, hip PT

I woke up a little before 7, and decided to get in a “leisurely” walk (my dr’s orders) before starting our day. I lost track of time – and distance! I didn’t mean to get in almost 6 miles but I underestimated how long it would take me to walk, especially at a slower pace, and by the time I realized it, I was already almost 3 miles from home.

Not running-related, but that night we saw the Cleveland Orchestra play an outdoor concert – they actually played the soundtrack to Harry Potter while we watched the movie! It was a perfect summery evening event.

Total: 26.89 miles running, plus walking and hiking, hip PT

Some questions for you:

  • When was the last time you had stitches? Did you have to wait 3 weeks to lift weights?
  • Is your summertime routine different from your other times of year’s routines?

I’m so sorry about the stitches–hopefully the mole is benign and that will be that. I’ve never had to take time off lifting, but running? Sadly yes… hang in there.

I love that photo of your kids at the Harry Potter concert–I have photos off both my boys dressed up like HP when they were kids. Too cute.

bummer on the unexpected stitches. I guess it depends on where they are on your body regarding the lifting.I’m sure the kiddos will keep you busy and sounds like you can do lots of walking

Oof- let’s start with that Sunday morning- I’m SO frustrated on your behalf that your plans for a long run outside were ruined! But, you seem to take these things in stride. I guess you’re pretty used to pivoting by now.

Sorry about those stitches! i wouldn’t be too crushed if someone told me I had to take time off of lifting weights, lol. It would be much, much harder to take three weeks off of running! Sounds like you’ll be able to get back to it tomorrow? Good luck, hope everything heals up well.

It’s been a while since I’ve had to take time off for that reason — but it’s really important. Does 6 miles count as a leisurely walk? I guess if you keep your HR down, LOL.

Congrats to your son’s team for making the playoffs even if they didn’t win. Sounds like they had a great season.

Love his outfit for the concert!

Is that at Blossom? Sounds like a fun event for the family. We keep saying we want to see the Sunday night concerts at the Toledo Zoo, but then everyone is too tired to go out. 🙂 I hope these low-HR days go by fast for you!

No lifting for three weeks? That sucks! Good for you that you can at least run again soon! Hopefully the mole will turn out to be harmless. I had a mole removed from my belly a few years ago and my dr didn’t really give me any orders, I just told my trainer and we avoided certain exercises for a while.

That photo of the heron is SO beautiful!!!

Sorry to hear about your stitches and I hope the biopsy comes back benign. I usually end up with stitches every year or two because I’ve had so many skin cancers removed. It totally depends on where the stitches are as to whether or not I lift afterward. If it’s on my upper body, I might work legs if I feel I’m not involving the stitches area; and vice versa if the stitches are on a leg. Hope you heal quickly!

Sounds like you’re having a lovely summer so far!

My stitches are on my forearm, so I’m going to see if I can do some core work or squats without holding weights. But it’s definitely an area of my body that I engage when i lift!

Stitches are tough! I had a 7-inch suture seam, back in 2017, when I had that emergency surgery for the staph infection over my knee. I had to wait about 10 days before doing anything “sweaty,” then almost three months before I was allowed to run again. Good luck, I hope all the healing goes well!
