Back from Spring Break Abroad

Wow, taking a week off from my usual weekly running update was strange! But I’m back now, and ready to share how the week went.

The reason I wasn’t able to share last week was because we were out for spring break! B and I took the whole family – the 5 of us – to Berlin to visit my brother and enjoy the kids’ first plane ride and European vacation.

It was great! If you haven’t read it yet, here’s my blog of a few trip highlights. But because I was out of the country, I didn’t get to write a full recap of workouts. So here’s the cliff’s notes (do young people even know what those are anymore?) and a quick Instagram post to see what we did.

And now, onto this week’s workouts. They weren’t great. FW was pretty sick a few days this week with a high fever and cough, which impeded not just my sleep but also my workouts in the mornings a few days. But I was able to get in my long run early in the week, so at least that was done! Here’s the full week:

Week of March 31: In terms of workouts, it was pretty low key. I got in only 3 runs during my vacation. BUT we got in tons of walking – in fact, I had 2 days at more than 30,000 steps and averaged in the 20,000s every day! So it was an active week, but different from my usual activities.

This week: We flew back Monday night, and didn’t get home until late. But I still got in some workouts and thanks to jet lag, some early mornings. Here’s how it looked.

Sunday: 5.26 miles running in Berlin! This was my last Berlin workout and it went well – I got in a run outside through the Tiergarten and even saw my favorite angel statue. I did a 4 mile run, then got back to the hotel and found everyone still sleeping. So, I went to the hotel gym and did a 1.26 mile cool down before heading back to get ready for the day, which also included a LOT of walking. This was one of my 30,000+ step days, and it felt great!

Monday: travel day/no workouts. We had to leave the hotel by 6:30 a.m. Germany time (12:30 a.m. Cleveland time) , and didn’t get home until 7:30 p.m. Cleveland time, so I was literally traveling for 19 hours. I got in plenty of airport walking and walking to and from the trains to the planes, but no running for me.

Tuesday: 10.06 miles running, 1 mile walking. Thanks to jet lag, I woke up at 3:30 pretty wide awake. This meant it was eas y for me to get out of bed and go for a run – my first double digit run of this training cycle! After not doing much activity on Monday and having only 3 runs the previous week, my body felt miraculously good on this run. I did get in some walking during the run, which slowed down my pace, but I still made it to 10 miles before 6 a.m. and it was time to shower/get ready for being back in the office.

Wednesday: 5.53 miles running, 1.83 miles walking, stretching, core work and a kettlebell arm workout. I again woke up before 4 a.m., so I had time not only to run, but also get in a longer core workout, arm workout and some stretching. I was surprised at how little soreness my legs were feeling, but sure enough, they were sore later in the day. I also got in a walk with GM in the morning to buy some bread.

Thursday: 30 minutes on the bike, longer core workout. I have to try not to be disappointed with this day’s workouts, but I am a little. I have excuses for why it was so short — 1, I wanted to rest my legs a little because of the 10 miler and then 5 miler. 2, FW woke up at 2:30 a.m. sick. 3, GM woke up at 5:30 a.m. and wouldn’t go back to bed. So, I only had time to workout before GM woke up and not the rest of the day because I was catering to FW and trying to also work. Then at night, I had to take LM to swimming. Oh well, I’m glad I at least got something in!

Friday: 55 minutes on the bike and abs. FW woke us up at 3:30 a.m. feeling sick to his stomach, so my sleep wasn’t that great. Then, he ended up sleeping on the couch with B while he waited out his fever, so i decided to stay inside in case GM woke up early again. I couldn’t get outside OR on the treadmill (treadmill was next to where FW was sleeping), but luckily I was able to work out on the bike for a little.

Saturday: 7 mile run, and 1.75 mi walk later in the day. I woke up to windy but blue skies and decided to go out for a few miles. I felt great, and the blue skies were a blessing after rain Thursday and Friday, and I almost wish I could have gone on for longer. But, we had GM’s first soccer practice and then piano for FW, so I had to go home to get ready. FW was finally feeling better, which was great after 2 days of being home sick. Later in the afternoon, I got in a nice outdoor walk in the sunshine!

Total mileage – 27.85 miles running

Questions for you:

  1. Did you get to travel for spring break?
  2. How old were you or your kids when they first went on an airplane?

I am linking up with Deborah and Kim for the Weekly Run Down.

  1. How fun to go to Germany! I am impressed with your weekly mileage, all things considered–jet lag and sick kids! I’m sure you’ll feel better this week!

  2. We did travel our kids when they were young as well. I believe it’s the best education you can give them. While it’s exhausting it’s worth it! Way to stay active and glad you got some good runs in while traveling

  3. What a wonderful experience! Just read your highlights post- we ran the Berlin marathon in 2013 and spent a few days there afterwards and really enjoyed it. You covered a lot of ground and how nice to visit your brother!

  4. I’ve run in the Tiergarten! Your trip sounds incredible. I like how you got up and ran 10 miles the day after you traveled back. But it’s good you got in a couple good days of running before all the illnesses started. You still had a nice week of mileage! Hope everyone is feeling better now, and you can get back to normal next week.

  5. No international travel with our kids, but we did numerous trips to Disney when they were young. I even flew once (ONLY once) by myself with all three kids and that was crazy! They were 6-1/2, 3-1/2 and 16 months…not sure how I survived that experience, LOL!

  6. It sounds like you had a great time!

I’ve been to Germany once or twice for work, but not to Berlin.

My mother-in-law took my kids to Europe when they were little, but one at a time.

  7. Well done doing all your workouts with sick kids and all! And how nice for you to visit Germany. It’s beautiful there! I’ve only been to Kiel and some little village we stayed in while driving home from Italy (when we lived in Sweden).

  8. Boo that FW is sick, but what a wonderful trip! I love it!

We didn’t travel over Spring Break. Mr PugRunner and I went away in early February, and then he went away the week after Spring Break. We are currently planning a summer trip or two.

I think A was 6 or 7 the first time he flew. The next time was last summer. And we will probably fly again this summer. I hate planes, though.

  10. It sounds like you had a nice spring break in Berlin! To answer your questions, we traveled, but stayed pretty close by in Richmond this year for spring break. It was a nice meeting place for our adult kids. I was 24 the first time I flew and my sons were in elementary/middle school when they first flew.
