It’s Always Something

Welp, there’s always something it seems getting in the way of my half marathon training. This week, after FW was finally feeling better (yay!) we lost hot water!

What does hot water have to do with my running? Okay, not a lot. But not being able to rely on having a shower in my house actually made my workouts change somewhat. The idea of not being able to shower after a run, AND having to be in the office, made me think twice about my workouts. We were without hot water Sunday through Wednesday evening due to a problem with our water heater, but thankfully it got resolved (with a new heater ugh!) so I could shower back to normal Thursday morning.

Sunday: 10.25 miles running outside! Before I knew about our hot water heater breaking (my husband ONLY takes cold showers, so he didn’t even notice!), I decided to take advantage of the good weather and get in a long run. I originally was planning on 8 miles, but when I got to 5, I texted B and asked if he minded if I was out a little longer and got in 10. I can’t remember the last time I got in a weekend long run and it was good practice to running in sunshine and a little warmer weather!

Monday: Cross training. I was SORE after my 10 miler and a little worried that I could feel my hip injury acting up. So, I opted for some core work, indoor cycling, and then about 4 miles of walking.

Tuesday5.36 miles running,  1 mile walking. My hip was thankfully feeling fine, so I got in a run and was going to do my core/strength training workout, but the kids were all up and ready for the day. I did later in the day get in  woke up to 50 degree weather, but it was WINDY! We had a wind advisory in effect until the afternoon, and I was a little nervous going out for a run. I didn’t want to blow away! Or more likely, have a tree branch or debris fall and hit me. Luckily, it was okay and I got home in time to get in a core workout, some arms, and a short cooldown on the bike. I also got in a mileish walk at lunchtime with a coworker.

Wednesday: 5.02 miles running, 1.56 miles walking. I got in a run but wasn’t feeling it. I ended up walking for a lot of it, which meant that as soon as I got home, it was time to get everyone ready for the day. I spent an extra 10 minutes running than I had thought because of all the walking, so again, didn’t ge to focus on anything else but a few walks later in the day.

Thursday: 8 miles running and 3.5 miles walking, with some light arm weights. I wanted to get in a mid-week longerish run and had 8 miles on the schedule. We FINALLY had hot water back, so I knew Thursday was the day! My legs felt okay (yay!) but my lungs/body were tired. I had a honey packet before heading out and then slowly made my way to 8 miles. I had some time later in the morning to get in a stroller walk with GM, and some light arm weights and planking before starting my day.

Friday: 4 mile run outside, 10 minutes on the bike and pilates/core workout, then 1.75 mi walk later in the day. I slept a little late and woke up to on and off rain showers. I wanted to get outside and even though it was raining it was 60 degrees so I didn’t mind. Well, around 3 miles in it started lightning so I decided to head home and finish up on the bike and with a core workout.

Saturday: 2.55 miles outside plus 30 minutes on the bike and planking workout. We had early soccer (GM) and baseball (FW) followed by 2 birthday parties, so I was really glad to be able to get in a quick workout. It was shorter than I would’ve liked, but some days, I’m just grateful to be able to move my body.

Total miles: 35.23 miles running plus misc. on the bike and walking

Questions for you:

  1. Did you watch any races this week? I loved watching along with Boston and following along with friends who were running! I know some people running London too.
  2. Have you read anything good lately? I’ve started some audiobooks while running, especially if I get to run during daylight.

I am linking up with Deborah and Kim for the Weekly Run Down.

  1. hooray for hot water. Our toilet broke but we have two others. I had to work Monday so couldn’t watch Boston. Happy to see how well Des did. I am a library person. I listen to podcasts but not books. And I always have company on long runs. Luckily.

  2. The wind was ridiculous this week and I had to adjust my runs to accommodate it! I’m getting ready to head out this morning and it looks calm. Shhhh….

I just finished a really good book called Wolf at the Table by Adam Rapp. Seriously could not put it down. i’ll do a review on my blog at the end of the month.

  3. Oh, hot showers are a must! Glad you got yours fixed. I can’t believe your husband takes cold showers!

When we’ve had water issues I’ve got my office gym or my Mom’s house as options, but neither are convenient!

  4. Hot showers are a necessity! I probably would have gone to a friends house to shower 🙂 way to go fitting it all in

  5. Nice job on the 10 miler! Although it must have been an unpleasant surprise to come home and find there was no hot water. I don’t mind taking a quick cold shower, but after a ten mile run, I want a nice long hot shower and hair wash. Glad you got yours fixed!

i just finished a riveting book by Linda Castillo called Sworn to Silence- but I’ll warn you, it might give you nightmares.

  6. Based on your title I was afraid you had another injury. Other than the expense, I’d take the hot water heater breaking. We just had to have our upstairs AC unit repaired, ugh!

I just finished Kara Goucher’s book and have Des Linden’s on my nightstand to start next.

  7. That would be a deal-breaker to lose hot water, especially for a few days. I’d probably resort to a sponge bath (?), but I’d have to keep my workouts fairly tame, LOL.

  8. Great week of running and I’m glad your hip is doing well.
How annoying about the hot water! Such a bummer when you have to replace things like that. Not cheap either I guess but good you got it fixed! Once when I came from the gym and went into the shower it was acting weird, the flow of water lacked pressure and I couldn’t get it to heat up. I discovered there was a water leak in the area and the water would be gone for up to 7 hours. Not fun after a workout!

  9. I did watch the Boston Marathon this week. I forgot all about that! It seems like so long ago. I had a list of friends who were running. Everyone seemed to have a good race despite the temps being a little warmer than they would have preferred.

Glad you got your hot water back!

  10. Great miles for you this week! Way to go on the 10 miler. That’s a confidence builder for sure. Ugh on the lack of hot water. Glad it’s all fixed now!
