Weekly Run Down: Mini Vacation

This week, my workouts and running schedule were a little off, and my mileage was less than the past few weeks. But for good reason — we got in a mini family vacation! My son was off school, and we decided to take off Thursday and Friday to drive to Cincinnati to do a few days of exploring, see some baseball, and other kid-friendly activities. With that, I knew I’d have to get in my long run early (I didn’t want to “waste” two hours of the time off with the kiddos to go away on a run) in the week, and be flexible with my other days. Here is what was on the schedule for this week:

  • Speed training: 8×400 m run
  • Long run: 10 miles
  • Core work: 3-5 days (8-10 min videos)
  • 2-3 other runs, 30-50 minutes each

Here’s how the week turned out:

Sunday:  day off! All I did was a 3ish mile walk – After last week and averaging 20,000+ steps each day, I was tired and knew my body would do well from a day off. It was easy to choose Sunday, because we had plans to wake up at 6:30 to get to Easter Mass, do an Easter egg hunt with the kids, and get to my inlaws for brunch (all before noon!). I was glad to still be able to get in a solo walk in the afternoon after our long morning.

Monday: ~8x400m interval run plus ~2 mile walk later in the day – With FW being off school for the week, I got to sleep in an hour later than usual. The extra hour made SUCH a difference and I wasn’t nearly as tired waking up.

Tuesday: 10 mile run, plus .5 mile walk and core exercises later in the day –  I was so happy to get in my long run on Tuesday! I wasn’t sure I was going to get in 10 miles in Cincinnati, and didn’t want to spend significant vacation time getting it in. I’m not going to lie – it was harder than last week’s run, where I did 9 but felt like I could have gone more if I had the time. My pace was about 10 seconds/mile slower and I was struggling. But I got it done before getting to work that day, and even got to watch the sun rise during my run.

Wednesday: 4.15 mile run and ab workout plus 1 mile mid-day walk – I got to sleep in somewhat again thanks to spring break, and still got in a shortish run before heading out to work. I saw a great sunrise on the run, and then at lunchtime I took a short walk with a coworker. I was glad to get my legs moving before spending that evening in the car – right after I got home from work, we headed down to Cincinnati for a mini vacation

Thursday: no run but 5+ miles walking and a swim on vacation – Day was spent exploring the city and zoo with the kids, and then at night we walked to the baseball game. I got in plenty of steps and didn’t get go for a run! We also got in some swimming with the kids, which mainly included me walking across the pool several times while holding GM 🙂

Friday:  ~1 mile treadmill run, 10 minutes on the elliptical, and then 5+ miles walking and a swim again – I had about 20 minutes in the hotel gym to myself while B got the kids ready for a swim, so I ran a mile and did a little elliptical before meeting them at the pool for some more pool walking. I ended up running on the treadmill to a Cleveland-themed course, which was fun.

Saturday: 4 mile run along the Cincinnati waterfront –   B knew I was dying to get in at least one run on the trip, so after breakfast, he suggested I head out to run along the river, and the meet up with him and the kids at a playground. I passed a running group and a 5K race and had a little FOMO, but all in all it was a really nice run. Their waterfront trail is beautiful and it was so great to be outside running again after 2ish days off!

Questions for you:

  • Have you ever been to Cincinnati?
  • Do you fit in workouts during family vacations?

  1. How nice to have a little getaway! I’m sure the kids loved the pool–that was always my guys favorite! Yes, I always packed my running shoes when we went on family trips. Besides enjoying exploring a new place in my running shoes, it was nice to have the time for myself. You know, when momma ain’t happy, ain’t nobody happy…lol

  2. What a fun family trip! I have driven through Ohio a few times but have not had an opportunity to spend any time there (other than a hotel stay while driving). Great job on that 10-miler!
